Scanavo Global have been notified and are going to work with clients to raise awareness to all steps of the SteelBook processing/logistics etc.

We like metal cases, just not metal knifes opening them. I've also been told by Play they use blunt plastic objects and not knives.

Wow, seems to be a worldwide phenomenon. I think it would be smart for the factory to put a simple sheet of cardboard on top and bottom of the product in the box to stop the knife from touching the steels. There is always a way to "dummy proof" opening boxes.....we deal with it all the time with product at work.

Does anyone have any pictures of the boxes they are packed in that ship to the stores?

That might be the party line but I'm not sure I believe it. I used to work in a warehouse shipping large quantities of blu rays and I've seen this damage being inflicted first hand. There's no protection over the spines when they're packed into long container boxes, and when warehouse staff are under pressure to mail out thousands of orders they reach for the first weapon to quickly get into the box. Blunt plastic objects don't get the job done quick enough.

I can't explain any score marks under the shrink wrap, but in cases where the wrap itself is cut then it's almost certainly down to overzealous warehouse staff. That's why this problem needs to be relayed all the way down to warehouse management level.

I was speaking to a rep from HMV about this a few weeks ago and he confirmed that the issue was being looked into after a large number of complaints.

It seems to me that what's happening here is that the cases are being scored when shipped to the disc manufacture to put the discs inside. It's a classic box-cutter mark, made using a sharp blade.

I used to manage a warehouse selling blu rays so I've seen this kind of damage inflicted first hand. It's so easily avoided. All that needs to be done is to instruct staff to pull up the box lid before cutting. It's a simple technique and would help avoid routinely inflicting this kind of damage.

The solution seems really obvious - put a layer of protection on top of the steels. There is cheap thick cardboard that costs pennies (and takes a lot of force to actually go through) that would do the job. Have it at both steps of the 'box opening' chain - the first stage when the steels are unprotected in the box, then when they are cellophaned and resent to the warehouse in the next box, again have the protection in place so no 'through the cellophane' slashes occur.

Please leave feedback about packaging at Amazon.co.uk. This is unacceptable, damn employees using knives to cut boxes. They could at least pull up the flap.

My Life of Pi Steel just arrived with the start of a spine slash. It would have probably been a full spine slash, if the spine itself was sitting perfectly in its position, instead of being slightly off centre so is sitting slightly raised at one side (deos that make sense?). I've had this off-centre spine thing before, but it looks like it saved the spine (mostly) from being slashed this time.
