No proper restoration has been done on any of the Star Trek films except the Wrath of Khan because of the poor shape the negative was in. To make maters worse CBS were too bloody lazy to do the new special effects of Star Trek The Motion Picture in HD so even if The Motion picture got a Criterion standard overhaul the new effects can't be used as they are SD only and studios these days tend to be poor at overhauling their catalog. That's usually left to the specialist video labels.
There were no Blu ray rays at the time- so that is why they didn't do the effects in HD for ST:TMP.

sad that only khan got any kind of treatment. would be nice if they were working on that right now. but i'd imagine at least 1 person on this site would have heard about it.

still...even as a stand alone, i'll hopefully be snagging this.
The weird thing is- they had this release ready before Nimoy's death. So it's sole release (without any other Trek movies) is all the more baffling.

I kind of want to jump in on the GB. But this being an expensive one, confirmation on finishing/disc quality should come as standard. C'mon Best Buy, spill the beans - how do we know what we're investing in here?

@C.C. 95 I know what you mean, but I think this is one of those movies that some fans deem to be superior to the original. Although it would be nice to have Steelbooks of the other movies and notably the first one.

Don't worry. :) Remember- next year is Star Trek's 50 Anniversary. EVERYTHING IS COMING!!!

High definition TV had been available in Japan since 1997 and we'd had HD laserdisc from around that time so it was a viable option to do a HD master for future proofing and HD masters for home video release have been ongoing since 1998 even though most countries hadn't any HD home formats as yet.

I agree. They were not forward thinking. Hey- ST:TNG rebuilt a lot of their effects from scratch for those blu rays- so Paramount knows all about the process...it all comes down to the metrics of the bottom line. Is it worth it for them?
And that is always a tough one to know. After all, they were notorious for never giving the feature films a decent budget. After all the dough ST has made them, they still treat it as a red-headed stepchild. But they DID pony up to make those glorious Next Gen sets- which are probably the gold standard for releasing a TV show on Blu ray.

Yessss ! Can't wait for the release of everything ! I hope they do the Tv Show as well. Brace for impact

Germany released steelbooks of every ST:TNG season. I did not buy them because even though they are in steel, the packaging was completely blank on the inside. It was just a metal box. And at $100 per season box, just not even close to worth it. (I don't think they even had booklet episode guides.)
