I have both 3d and 2d Steelbook but I didn't open is there anyway to tell if there is something wrong or do they need to be open

You would need to open them. The defects, if present are underneath the slipcover.

I got mine yesterday and opened it as a disc was loose. I got lucky as it was flawless. It's a gorgeous looking steel. All I need is a 3D player and TV and I'm well away .
