NBC Cafeteria Celebrates Black History Month With Fried Chicken Special

twitpic_2-4.jpg

So who at NBC thought it would be a good idea for the special today to be, among other things, fried chicken, “in honor of Black History Month”?

Because, spoiler alert – it wasn’t a good idea at all. And now NBCU employee Questlove is bringing it to the attention of his 1 million plus Twitter followers.

Questlove, the band leader and drummer for The Roots (the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon) tweeted this picture from the NBC Commissary at 30 Rock, with the comment: “Hmm HR?”

Update:
@NBCU just tweeted:

@questlove http://twitpic.com/11d07s – The sign in the NBCU cafeteria has been removed. We apologize for anyone who was offended by it.

What's wrong with that? Sorry dude but I think some people are way too sensitive and still have issues.

Hell if they had something similar for the Hispanic Heritage month I'd be hella happy. lol They could put burritos, tacos, enchiladas, tamales, you name it. It's ok.

Like I said people only find this insulting if they have issues or just too damn sensitive.

Wheres the watermelon?:wtf: Some people just too much time and complain about everthing..hope they serve tacos, beans, rice and beer on Cinco de Mayo!

But the thing is if you, as a company, associate things with specific people that could in anyway be deemed offensive it's just a bad idea.

I mean come on. fried chicken and collard greens to celebrate black history?

I don't think anyone would have a problem with it if it weren't such a strong sterotype in america.

And I bet if they served corn beef and cabbage, and a LOT of beer on St. Patricks Day someone would be offended.

but that IS hispanic food. if you go to Mexico that's what's served.

Anyway, just thought it was out of touch.

The chef who made the menu was black. She said this is food that she eats and her friends eat. She's been wanting to do that for 8 years since she's been there.

I think the chef was correct in creating this special menu for Black History Month. The menu items seem to be emphasizing the stereotypical black diet, in the U.S., but if people would just do some research they would realize that it is quite an accurate portrayal of African culinary history in the United States.

But heck, NBC had to know some people would be offended by the menu.

Yeah it was just questlove being stupid to automatically jump to conclusions to think it was a racist slam .. honestly, just like the hispanic food comment deems that ok ... the food listed was in fact SOUL FOOD ... if you are going to have food to celebrate black history month then why not Soul Food!?

Cajun's get cajun food for celebrations
hispanics get hispanic food for celebrations
so it doesnt hurt for them to have soul food in my opinion.

Now if it was some racist comment dealing with the food during slavery days that is a whole nother' story imo.

like I said, I agree with you, a lot of black people do eat the food on the menu. I can see both sides to the issue. It REALLY helps that the chef was black. And i'm not sure that it was just questlove being dumb... I'm sure he was immediately offended and didn't take the time to talk to the chef. Most people wouldn't think to do rational things if they were offended.

Lil' Wayne Sentencing Extended Over His Busted Teeth!

Lil' Wayne was scheduled to be formally sentenced to a year in prison today for illegally being in possession of a loaded gun, but because of his RIDICULOUS grill and the surgery it will need to be fixed, he has been granted an extension.

His oral surgery is scheduled for Friday, but he won't have to face the judge again until March 2nd.

It's pretty lame that he can get an extension to get his teeth fixed but I couldn't get an extension if my life depended on it. If he's gone this long with his teeth looking like crap, I don't see how another year will hurt.

David Letterman Sends His Stage Manager To The Hospital!

While killing time last night waiting for their special guest, MVP Saints quarterback Drew Brees, to show up, David Letterman thought he would throw the pigskin around with his crew.

He sent a strong spiral toss to his stage manager, 63 year old Biff Henderson, who caught the ball, but also fell off stage almost directly into the audience. He seemed fine at first, but shortly after, he complained that he couldn't move one of his knees. He was rushed to the hospital immediately to be check out.

We're told it ended up not being too serious and that Biff was released sometime last night after the taping.
