Aronofsky in the Running to Direct Superman
Source: Heat Vision September 28, 2010

Black Swan helmer Darren Aronofsky has joined the list of potential directors for Warner Bros.' new Superman movie, reports Heat Vision.

The list includes Duncan Jones, Jonathan Liebesman, Matt Reeves, Tony Scott and Zack Snyder. The trade adds that Ben Affleck was also briefly in the running but he is reportedly no longer pursuing the job.

Aronofsky is said to be in active talks, though it's early.

Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas will executive produce the film, targeted for a 2012 release.

I definitely think this is going in the right direction... it seems more on par with Nolan's Batman now. I think the gritty drama approach works really well for DC characters, as I have always seen both Superman and Batman as dark figures anyway.

Snyder and Nolan are two of my favourite director's, so I have 100% faith that 'Man of Steel' will be absolutely EPIC! The teaser alone almost has me peeing my pants. :p

I wish I could link the article from a couple years ago, but I can't find it. I remember reading an interview with Nolan saying he had got writer's block on Dark Knight Rises, but in turn they(Goyer/brother) came up with a great story for Superman. Man of steel got fast tracked after that.

I wish they would have released the Comic Con trailer. It was SO much better. This one doesn't really show anything and what it does show is pointless... I mean some of it matters, like him flying, but a lot of the stuff, like him fishing, is pointless.

It's a good trailer, I just hope they do release the CC trailer for you all to see, and for me to see again! It was so much better.

I'm not really a huge Snider fan, he drove that nail deep into his coffin with Sucker Punch... But I hope, with Nolan producing, he won't be allowed to screw it up and things will be set.

He did say at CC that once Superman's house is in order there's a chance we'll see a JLA movie... So lets hope this does Superman good!

I liked that teaser. Looking forward to the full proper trailer (which will no doubt get a teaser for that, and then a trailer for that trailer before we see it)

Thanks for that Drum! Been dying to see the CC trailer. Can't wait for the HD version of this... it looks effin' awesome. :D

To me, Zack Snyder has still to prove himself. In material such as 300 and Watchmen, he had excellent source material that didn't require major storyboarding as Frank Miller and David Gibbons respectively, did truly awesome work.

Sucker Punch was slightly better than average. Sure, the visuals were great, but the story could have been better.

Man of Steel will definitely be a test of his abilities to convey the definitive Superman movie. I will definitely give him the benefit of the doubt and watch this in theaters when it hits. Here's why I think he'll pull this off:

a) Snyder does green screen work better than anyone. My opinion and I'm sticking to it. In fact, I would go so far as to say that he's perfected green screen work. Expect to see incredible sequences of Krypton and the Fortress of Solitude (incidentally, in an alternate Earth, it could be known as the Solarium of Fortitude).
b) Henry Cavill, Russel Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Amy Adams are definitely an ensemble cast who bring star quality to this film. Their acting pedigree is unquestionable.
c) You can bet that the SFX will be out of this world - pun intended.
d) Snyder does well with established universes (coming back to my references to 300 and Watchmen). With the wealth of material that the Superman mythos offers, it should be a walk in the park for him.

Now then, apart from the teaser footage (Comic-Con was a little too far for me to get to ;)), we know that Zod is one of the villains. I love the footage of a young Kal-El wearing a cape. Let's be honest; which of us as kids did not do that? Will Synder reference the excellent Superman: Earth One story material? I hope so. That is the quintessential Kal-El / Clark Kent story IMHO.
