Old post:
In an article at Variety talking about New Line Cinema, which two years ago became a unit under Warner Bros.Pictures, studio executive Alan Horn reveals that the first of the two Hobbit films may not hit theaters until late 2012, a full year after the previously-announced December 2011 release:

Once the script for the second film is in -- Jackson and his longtime collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are working on it with Del Toro -- New Line will work up a budget for both films and start casting. New Line exec Michael Disco, who was once Emmerich's assistant, will oversee for the studio.

Horn won't predict when the first of the two "Hobbit" films will be out, but says the most probable scenario would be a release in the fourth quarter of 2012.

"It's a big bet for us. But it's one we think will pay off given the success of 'Lord of the Rings,'" says Emmerich. "This is one of the few movies it feels like people are waiting for."

New Line's original plan was to release the first film in December 2011, followed by the second one in December 2012. One reason for the delay may be the restructuring of MGM, which shares the financing rights with New Line for the "Hobbit" films. MGM is currently accepting bids for the studio and those rights may go to another studio (Warner Bros. is said to be one of the bidders).

Not super excited about this but I'm looking forward to it. Plus it's a good excuse to watch the extended blu rays :naughty:

The Extended Editions are too awesome. They clock in at just over (or just under) 10 hours in total. My favourite is The Two Towers, especially the opening sequence with Gandalf fighting the Balrog. Epic.

Caught the IMAX trailer during a screening of Prometheus a little while ago. Now I can't wait for it. :D

i saw an imax trailer before prometheus. Whilst content wise the film looks epic, something was up with the picuture in the Manchester one. Couldnt tell if the 3D was playing up, but i found it harder to focus on :S

Im sure the full release will be better quality, i thought i was just me but afterwards a few of my mates mentioned the same thing.

Per Empire Online-

So it's confirmed that this is going to be a trilogy. A lot of people seem to think this doesn't need three films because it's apparently shorter than the LOTR books. I don't have a clue, I've never read any of the books lol Does anyone think it needs 3 films or would 2 be enough?

looking at the size of the hardbacks in my collection, i honestly thought they were over doing it with 2 films to begin with!

but as i LOVE LOTR, i don't mind having another 3 films to watch

but hearing "Prequel Trilogy" brings back horrible nightmares of a floppy eared alien :ohno:

I honestly cant understand why its been turned into a trilogy - though I shall have faith in Mr Jackson as he didnt let me down with LOTR :D

The Hobbit is quite a thin book compared to the LOTR trilogy... the only thing I'm worried about is him bringing in characters who weren't even in the bloomin' book hahaha

I've just read the book and I don't really understand how they gonna extend this story in 3, but hey... It's PETER JACKSON!!!! :scat:

Sure it's a short book, but remember that one page can equal an hour on film or one page can equal 2 seconds on film. Peter Jackson is a good director - he's gonna three great flicks out of this!

I'm not sure I understand what the trilogy is about. The first two films are shot and done. But now they're adding a third after the fact? Is this really a "Hobbit" movie, or something to take place in between The Hobbit and LOTR? Or are they going to re-edit the second film a shove a third film in there?

I think that they're going to shoot a new film and possibly add footage that might have been cut out from the 2nd Hobbit film.

No...
the reason of the 3rd film is really simple. Jackson and his team (Walsh, Boyens and others) watched the entire footage few weeks ago (before Comic-Con) and they concluded that they had A LOT more great footage then they thought...
They will only need a little bit more reshooting and maybe some new stuff to complete a 3rd film.
Don't forget that Jackson is not known to make short movies ;)

Of course, maybe they'll have to cut/recut some stuff but that's where all the magic happen ;)

If you want a great read from real LOTR fans on that mather:

I see that Benedict Cumberbatch is part of the principal cast of the 3rd Hobbit movie, reuniting him with his Sherlock co-star, Martin Freeman.
