Theo James to take over UNDERWORLD franchise

As previously reported, the UNDERWORLD franchise will be changing, though not in the way as originally thought.

Rather than continuing the story of Kate Beckinsale’s Selene, the fifth film in the UNDERWORLD series will instead focus on Theo James’ character, David. Introduced in UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING, David is a Vampire-Corvinus Strain Hybrid thanks to being resurrected by Selene’s own blood. He was last seen in company with Selene and her daughter Eve (India Eisley) as they went on a search to find Selene’s lover (and father to Eve), Michael (portrayed by Scott Speedman).

This is why this announcement is so strange. David was last seen with Selene, yet neither Beckinsale or her character will be a part of this new UNDERWORLD. It’s also been revealed that while David will be the main character, he’ll have two unknown-at-this-time female characters joining him — an odd coincidence considering he last appeared alongside two female characters.

James somewhat hit it big this year with his role as Four in DIVERGENT. With three sequels coming for that film, it’s understandable why the studio would want to take advantage of James’ rising star and make David into a lead character.

I’ll be curious to see whether UNDERWORLD fans accept this change of pace. I guess at the end of the day, at least it’s not a reboot.

UNDERWORLD 5 has yet to receive an official title or release date.
