Sent them an email about the stock issue. Their reply (after two days):

Obviously they do have the stock, as they are selling them through the outlet, so I guess this was just a lie/bad PR. Unless they treat Zavvi Outlet as a totally separate entity? In which case how did they acquire stock of 500 items from this limited run?

Are Zavvi breaking any law by putting the price up?

in a word no sadly not. especially as i imagine that Zavvi and Zavvi outlet are listed as seperate companies under a holding company.

that will be a standard reply to all emails regarding any product being out of stock very probably. and they will have done one of two things to be stocking it in Zavvi outlet, selling them a bulk order upfront when product is first made available or selling them all the cancellations as part of an agreement between the two.
at least thats my take on the matter!!!

totally sucks, but in the end thats business and i cant get cross about it cos if i could do things that that... i probably would!!!

I don't see why people are complaining.
This is the free market. This is supply and demand.

If Zavvi want to list it for 500 quid then so be it.
If they find enough buyers then fair play to them.

But as it stands they're flying out the door for 23.99 so it seems that a lot of people think this is a fair price to pay otherwise why would they pay it?

If Zavvi didn't make a profit on steelbooks then they wouldn't do them.
then people would complain that they can't get steelbooks.

I just don't understand it.

No. In regards to cancellations, an agreement is only made when your card is charged. Before that they have no obligation to fufil orders. In regards to increasing the price, well they can charge whatever price they like. There are no laws governing what a company can or can't charge.

Folks Zavvi is probably just selling their cancellations. I really doubt they got "a new shipment" lol. We all agree that Aladdin now seemed like a great deal by comparion. I'm guessing Disney let the price on that one slip through the cracks and were more stern on a higher price point for JB and LM. Why would Zavvi put their Aladdin cancellations back on the site for 17.99 when JB and LM are still up for 22.99? Those still aren't "truly sold out" yet btw, so maybe they are trying a different approach with Aladdin.

Selling them in the market at a higher profit just means they are basically capitalizing on some of the market hype. There is no law that says a company cannot do this.

However, there are two main issues I have with what Zavvi is doing with stock management from a fairness standpoint. And I think this is the real problem that is at the root.

1. They are not correctly reporting when the item is truly sold out. If they know there are 500+ cancellations that are now available to sell, they should not report the item as sold out yet. They should recalculate, add the cancellations back into stock, and sell all the cancellations until it is truly sold out for real. This would save on boatloads of confusion and suspicion. Zavvi is screwing up in this area big time.

2. They do not seem to be saving enough (or any?) stock for replacement due to damaged or misplaced orders. Bad move to sell them all off IMO and then tell their customers to "return the damaged item for refund". That's basically telling their customers... "Sorry you got a dented steelbook. Deal with it."

Are Zavvi breaking any law by putting the price up?

Surely there must be some fair practice law in place that doesn’t allow retailers who have a monopoly over certain markets (exclusive titles) to charge extortionate amounts like this??

When I say an "extortionate amounts", I am defining it as a comparable product manufactured to a similar specification sold at a much lower price, for example:

Close Encounters Zavvi Exclusive - £14.99
Aladdin Zavvi Exclusive - £23.99

There's probably very little difference in cost to manufacture these 2 titles, and yet one is priced at £14.99 and the other is priced with a 60% mark up just because the demand is there for it. Isn’t this classed as unethical profiteering?

What are people supposed to do in this situation, where they want the product and haven't got the option to get it anywhere else? I suppose we will just have to wait for Zavvi to keep inflating prices until they are high enough for us to finally decide that we aren’t happy to pay it.

I'm all for store exclusives but only if the price is relative to the print run and comparable to other print runs of similar quality items (similar steelbooks). A good example of this is The Entertainment Store print runs, whilst they are priced high at £28 or so, the print run is much smaller at 500 - 2,000 (way below Aladdin’s 5k). I would expect their costs to come down the higher the print runs become, this is yet to be seen though.

The counter argument to all of this I suppose is the eBay scalper issue, and that eBay scalpers are essentially playing the same game, fuelling the fire and helping to justify/set Zavvi’s price increase. Whether eBay sellers should fall under the same ethical codes as major retailers like Zavvi is another question in itself....

Not sure where that rant came from, maybe my new found Ninja status has gone to my head! :scat:
