It's been mentioned before, but Fox are notorious for changing steelbook finishes midway through a franchise.

In release order...

X-Men: First Class - printed ratings, no embossing/debossing, printed back*
X-Men Origins: Wolverine - no embossing/debossing*
X-Men - no embossing/debossing*
The Wolverine - no embossing/debossing
X2 - embossed

Taken - no embossing/debossing*
Taken 2 - embossed

A Good Day to Die Hard - no embossing/debossing
Die Hard - embossed
Die Hard 2 -embossed

*included DVD

Not to mention sometimes using teaser posters, theatrical posters, DVD covers, new art etc. etc.

Yes, but this are not the same situation.

The most of this steelbooks coming at the time, before Fox make embossings.

But Aliens came out at the time, Fox uses embossings for many steelbooks(for example Black Swan).

I agree it was odd that Aliens wasn't embossed in the first place, but it's not unusual for steelbook finishes to change partway through a franchise or collection.

As Aliens was a Zavvi exclusive, I can only assume that the choice of no embossing was theirs. We know that it comes at an extra cost, one they decided to avoid. Alien, Alien 3 and Resurrection seem to have come with the standard embossing. Don't forget that even The Wolverine was flat, and that came out in a time when Fox embossing is standard. That was pretty much a worldwide release so what was the thinking behind that?

It probably wouldn't have been so bad if Zavvi had released Alien as an exclusive, then the first one would have been flat rather than just the second one. Prometheus is also flat (but was released before the embossing craze I guess).

Recently Disney did Aladdin and Finding Nemo as gloss, then loads that were matte, before returning to gloss with Cinderella, Bambi and Brave. It happens.

I thought all these were zavvi exclusive when everyone was complaining to them about the finish. Just saw this and alien 3 in hmv and they didn't look half bad, definitely wait for a price drop tho, I don't see them flying off the shelves.

Is aliens a zavvi exclusive? And only means of completing the set?

When i watch alien for the first time, which cut to watch?

Best to watch the Theatrical version First

Director's cut uses scenes originally cut by Ridley Scott when he was making the film back in 1979 and removing some of the original footage

He worked on an extended version for the Fans of the Film using the cut footage but even then he decided this was to long and affected the mood of the original film
He then cut this again to create the Director's cut removing some original footage and put in some of the cut footage
Overall its minor difference between the 2 versions

For originality its best to watch Theatrical version first in my opinion and then watch the Directors Cut

Note in reality The Directors Cut is about minute shorter than the theatrical cut

Theatrical version (116:37)
Director's cut (115:49)

Note although you would end up double dipping I suggest you also buy Alien Anthology Blu-ray set
This has 2 Bonus Discs with must view extras very extensive and brilliant

Ok thanks paul. What about aliens and alien 3?

Ok thanks paul. What about aliens and alien 3?

Aliens is a different matter the extended version is better and has some footage that expands the start of the film and explains some ? that you were left wondering about when watching the Theatrical version

But as you have both versions with aliens again if you not seen this before watch the Theatrical version then watch Special Edition
Like watching a new film in some ways

Aliens
Theatrical version (137:14)
Special Edition" version (154:26)

Alien 3
Theatrical version (114:52)
Special Edition" version (144:52)
I have no preference with either version but overall the special edition is just about better
The film was affected by director and script changes which made the film in some parts disjointed

Again I recommend if you like these films to get Alien Anthology Blu-ray set for the extras bonus discs
The extras are a must watch if you become a fan of the films
