Steelbook & Collecting FAQ's:

Q: Where can I find a list of Steelbooks released?

A: blu-raysteelbooks.com

Q: Can I play movies contained inside Steelbooks on my Blu-Ray Player?

A: It depends-Blu-Rays are coded with Region A, B or C. Most Blu-Rays are "unlocked", regardless of what region they are, but it's always a good idea to check this forum or web resources before buying, as some are "locked".

Q: What are the differences between Steelbooks™, Iron Packs™, Metal Paks™, Viva Metal Boxes, Tins, etc?

A: Check out pics and discussion in our forum here

Q: What does "G1" and "G2" mean when discussing Steelbooks?

A: "G1" (1st Generation) refers to a Blu-Ray in a DVD-sized case. And "G2" (2nd Generation) refers to a Blu-Ray in a Blu-Ray-sized case.

Q: How to fix a loose disc on a steelbook you want to keep factory sealed that came with a floater?

A: Fixing a loose disc

Q: How do I navigate international shopping sites?

A: You can download a free 'add on' for most browsers called 'Google Translate'. Once you have it installed, the pages will translate automatically.

Q: I have many more questions-is there a general list of links to help me learn about Steelbooks, protecting them, etc?

A: Yes, here

Andy, there's likely nothing wrong with your address-as we discussed at length we've both ordered for years without address changes, and from here and other forums, there are plenty of folks with similar issues, that have always received their shipments previously and now are suddenly having issues.

Maybe here and there, their system is not recognizing that it needs to go to another country, when the address is entered-it thinks it's going to Hollywood, CA, Germany and kicks it back before it even leaves. Or something is going wrong when DHL retrieves addresses from Amazon, or receives the feed with address info in the logistics center, where orders are likely drop shipped. I honestly don't know-but the UK thing is odd. It's possible that they've changed their logistics/fullfilment. I've had my share of frustration with this, and know how you feel. Some people have had their orders sent back 3 and 4 times, without any explanation. I hope your replacement comes with less of a headache! :scat:

Have you tried speaking to a customer services rep at Amz.com and then tell them that you have a problem with an Amz.de order as the teams are spread all over the world and you may hit paydirt and your .com CS rep is sat next to a .de CS rep. I had a problem with a Prime order that took longer than a std delivery and I read them the riot act. They ended up giving me extra month + a 50/50 deal on a 640Gb 2 1/2" HDD. ended up costing me like £22 ($30). I went up about 3 supervisors she was in Caribbean one day, Ireland the next: reasonably high up pecking order I think, original call went out to India I think.

I have just started collecting the steel books my collection started with kickass and minority report. I generally find that I get quite lucky with shipping from the states and canada. I have only had to pay duty once so I generally find that shipping is a bit of a lottery when it comes to tax. I tend to use expedited shipping to the uk. It also depends on how much you are willing to spend on shipping too.

Hey Frasier-welcome to the hobby! Feel free to ask any questions here, in other threads or via PM. Hope you continue to contribute:)

What does limited really mean?

Hello guys,

I have a very important questions. What does the limited title really mean? For example on Canada Amazon, alot of the titles are limited, but they have been their for months! [ex: 300, Last Samuari]

Im a new collector as you know. Are these titles acutally limited? Or are they just meant to say that to make you think otherwise?

Thanks.

Hi PR - I've moved your post to this FAQ thread. Feel free to look it over and hopefully it answers other questions that might pop up.

But in the steelbook world, limited has always meant a static print run of X copies.

It also used to mean that when the steelbook was sold out, there would be no more copies produced.

However, we have seen studios in large steelbook markets like Germany reprint popular steelbooks or re-issue the steelbook with a new design.

So in the spirit of things, it does really mean that there were X copies produced, but it doesn't mean that they won't come back at some point in certain places.

RE: Amazon.ca - it's harder to sell issues of CATALOG releases on blu-ray, let alone steelbook editions. I've read this before that the most copies that a movie will sell are in it's first 4 weeks of it's release. So even though those titles have been in stock on the website for a long time, does not mean they aren't limited - it just means not a whole lot of people are buying them.

Hello,

Hey guys, this exact thing has also happened to me for Amazon.de recently:

Date Time Place More information
9th August 2011 16:26 Eggham GB Delay by customs.
9th August 2011 16:26 Croydon Delivery has left the depot.
5th August 2011 18:31 --- Goods leave the dispatch center and is on its way.

I then received an e-mail that it had been returned as "undeliverable".

The same has happened to fellow collector over the past month who does a lot of Group Buys. Several of his group buy shipments were simply rejected at Eggham, England. And it's not just Amazon.fr but .de and .uk too. The worst thing is that he lost a package of Sucker Punch's and can't reorder them.

This is incredibly frustrating. I had to send several e-mails to Customer Service before they stopped dicking around and finally said they'd look into it. I've never heard of the customs of an intermediate country being a problem.

Strangely I had another package (1 steelbook, because for whatever reason Amazon.de split it up), and tracking says it's almost arrived with no problems.

By the way, the other dude was able to get an individualized response by e-mailing Amazon's CEO himself (he didn't get the CEO, but someone in the "Executive Customer Relations Group". Maybe if we all send e-mails, they'll finally do something about this:

Well, first off it's a problem with bigger orders and DHL Global mail. Even though amazon has gone with this cheaper service, it's DHLGA that has the problem.

So this problem only really effects resellers, large collectors and folks that host group buys - even if you throw in folks from the US that order abroad - that's a small group and I doubt amazon in general will change their business practices for us.

How many times have we complained about poor packaging? :(

Egham, UK is the correct location of the DHLGA hub - amazon spelled it wrong.

Finally, if everyone upgrades to express shipping for the big orders, I'm sure it will work out fine. It did for me. :D

The care free days of flat 14 euro shipping are over, IMO. :movie:

But I still only see 1 shipping option..?

FYI: Confirmed no steelbook in North America for The Lion King. Working on confirmation for the Taiwan version.

CAn someone please start posting the regions bye each bluray steelbook

Hi I think it would be a lot easier for noobs like me if they started posted the region bye each bluray picture on this site that way theres no confusion and asking a million questions . JUst a thought for whoever runs this site.

Angelo, please see our other site for the Steelbook list. By clicking the country-specific Steelbook lists you can see which ones are region free.

http://www.bluraysteelbooks.com/steelbook-list/

Often region coding is not known until the title is released, especially when they come from smaller studios,or depending on in what country they are released. Generally, releases by Sony, Universal and Warner are region free. Studios like Fox and Disney often lock their releases. You can check a site like blurayregioncodes.com to see region coding for other sites.

Thread locked-please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

Angelo - and other members out there - we're working on a database feature to upgrade the collections and other items that will allow us to specify the region of the blu-ray inside the steelbook (if known) and hopefully this will link into the forum posts. All work in progress at the moment, so please be patient.

It will be a while before it's complete - so in the interim, as Deuce and DB state, there are other websites like regionfreemovies and our own bluraysteelbooks.com that specify what region (if known) the disc is. The amaray would have the same region as the steelbook. ;)

Moving this thread to the FAQ sticky.

You mean on the amazon.de website? It's available to choose from either one of the check out options, or right before you press the final / submit button.

I think it's a flat 30 euro, as I did 1 steelbook test and that worked out fine - and was the same cost as when I did the larger group buy. Note that amazon international sites appear to charge an upfront / estimated import tax costs to cover the UPS Express fees.

I figured why I didn't see it. If you have any unreleased items (i.e. preorders), for some reason, you don't get the Express option.

Still, I figure the premium is based on time, not weight. At the very least, Amazon should tell you if you are "abusing" the standard international delivery, which is already quite expensive.

I placed an order with Amz.fr and noticed that the shipping fees are much higher, whether it was because of it's the "coffret" (collections) coming out together so they are a lot heavier and they are actually taking notice. Also noticed that can only choose "Rapide" delivery €7.26 for 1 item, rises to €9.12 by adding on "The Matrix Trilogy". Throw in "Jurassic Park Trilogy" and it rises further to €10.98.

EDIT

Fancy the idea of email the CEO of Amazon to get a response.

That's what I highlighted on one of the thread, there shipping fees seems higher now. I guess it's per item with a minimum base rate.
