"Cross Sale on CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-rays, box sets and games across 230 stores and online comes just weeks after the traditional Boxing Day sale.

Last month the company admitted it is likely to breach its banking covenant - throwing the entertainment retailer's financial future into doubt.

A failure to fulfil lending requirements often signals a company is close to administration, retail analyst Robert Clark told Sky News.

"A lot becomes clear after Christmas - the sale suggests that they didn't have a good one and are trying to reel in as much cash to tie things over," he said.

"I’m not sure how much time they’ve got. I don’t think they’ll be able to sway their bankers. Financial institutions are less likely to show patience in this climate."

But HMV’s chief executive Trevor Moore said in December that closing more stores or placing the business into administration was not "part of our plan" and that the firm was in "constructive discussions" with banks about its performance.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told Sky News the Blue Cross Sale was not unusual for this time of year.

"Normally we'd look to run a multi-buy campaign of some kind at this time of year, but we thought we'd freshen our promotional mix up a bit and try something a bit different that will hopefully stand out from all the other sale offers on the high street right now," he said.

The retailer has taken a huge hit in the face of competition from online retailers like Amazon and Play.

But analysts argue that HMV has failed to reinvent itself in the last 15 years and invest in its stores to keep up with the modern technology revolution.

In December, despite numerous promotions,it announced total sales had fallen 13.5%, while like-for-like sales were down 10.2% in the six months to October 27.

HMV reported a loss before tax of £37.3m - an improvement on the £48.1m loss over the same period the year before. But net debt at the 91 year-old company increased from £163.7m to £176.1m.-bank-deadline."

I can't believe this, first Play.com now HMV. It's never going to be the same again :(

we always had an idea hmv were going down but the play one was a shocker it came out of nowhere, after such a gd last year this is just depressing, amazon can pretty much do what they want now.

I can't believe this. I'm still reeling from the Play shock and now this :(

It's not looking good that they're not taking the gift vouchers already. Surely if they're still trading they are obliged to by law?

The website is still up and running and it seems you can still preorder the Steelbooks. But who's going to gamble on preorders being honoured now?

Gutted :(

It's like the game scenario, and like most in administration, gift vouchers are worth nothing the paper they're written on. They're written off. Unfortunately.

Google is your friend. Comet did it also. Gift cards and vouchers suspended until further notice when you enter administration. Loyalty points also.

I'm not arguing with you, you're 100% right.

I just think it's awful that somebody has paid HMV cash for those vouchers but the recipients get nothing in exchange.

I mean you wouldn't pay for a Steelbook at the counter and then walk out the door empty handed. You'd want the Steelbook you paid for. I think the same should apply for gift vouchers. HMV pocketed the cash but gave nothing in return. Just my opinion.

HMV letter sent out. (dont know how long this image will be up for)

I'm actually surprised HMV didn't sell more of those discounted vouchers right before all this happened. I remember being nervous buying those when they came out a while back, thinking they were just harvesting cash before going into administration.

"No refunds for faulty goods" you have all been warned! The odds of HMV Staff packing those steels with care are not good.

Yep that's the most worrying thing from that letter. Them sending out steelbooks in jiffy's and customers not able to get them replaced if damaged.

If Skyfall does happen, surely will be best to get it in store, make sure it's mint.

I imagine hmv.com will continue to run or at least the brand will be sold off (hopefully not to The Hut Group).

Another reason they don't give any notice is because cards etc are unsecured debts effectively and they rank waay down the list as a creditor. Feel for kids who were given them as Christmas presents, "Here you are kid, have f*** all even though we worked hard for it".

Wonder how Sale of Goods act applies ? Obviously seems as if it doesn't ! Feel for the staff as it looks like this was out of the blue so soon after Christmas, albeit that it was always going to happen this year, shame it was so soon.

OMG yeah depressed times indeed what's going on 2k13 ?! not a good start everybody wants to clean up or something ?!!!

there was only Taken 2 I wanted now I am good for a trade !

As I've posted elsewhere, I think this will mainly effect the high street stores. I do believe that they will continue to trade online. I just feel sorry for all of the guys potentially about to lose their jobs

I have this morning managed to place an order using my 20% off voucher from the Skyfall pre-order, so that is still working (used it on the 5 Blus for £30)

I used my 20% code last night and the order went through fine. Whether or not the order is posted remains to be seen but I think you're right. Hmv.com is a separate company so can probably continue to trade without any bother from administrators.

Hope that lasts - hanging on to use for Resident Evil and Looper! :)

I recon (and pray) that it takes a while before they shut fully. It always seems to take a while for these things to happen and i did read somewhere they were hoping to get away with just closing a few stores. Apparently some high streets have two! Either way lets just hope they make it into march.
