"Cross Sale on CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-rays, box sets and games across 230 stores and online comes just weeks after the traditional Boxing Day sale.

Last month the company admitted it is likely to breach its banking covenant - throwing the entertainment retailer's financial future into doubt.

A failure to fulfil lending requirements often signals a company is close to administration, retail analyst Robert Clark told Sky News.

"A lot becomes clear after Christmas - the sale suggests that they didn't have a good one and are trying to reel in as much cash to tie things over," he said.

"I’m not sure how much time they’ve got. I don’t think they’ll be able to sway their bankers. Financial institutions are less likely to show patience in this climate."

But HMV’s chief executive Trevor Moore said in December that closing more stores or placing the business into administration was not "part of our plan" and that the firm was in "constructive discussions" with banks about its performance.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told Sky News the Blue Cross Sale was not unusual for this time of year.

"Normally we'd look to run a multi-buy campaign of some kind at this time of year, but we thought we'd freshen our promotional mix up a bit and try something a bit different that will hopefully stand out from all the other sale offers on the high street right now," he said.

The retailer has taken a huge hit in the face of competition from online retailers like Amazon and Play.

But analysts argue that HMV has failed to reinvent itself in the last 15 years and invest in its stores to keep up with the modern technology revolution.

In December, despite numerous promotions,it announced total sales had fallen 13.5%, while like-for-like sales were down 10.2% in the six months to October 27.

HMV reported a loss before tax of £37.3m - an improvement on the £48.1m loss over the same period the year before. But net debt at the 91 year-old company increased from £163.7m to £176.1m.-bank-deadline."

I think like someone said earlier in the thread, in the mean time until we actually see concrete proof (i.e. an automated email or an official statement) that HMV are cancelling or honoring customer pre-orders, I don't think we can keep assuming what is happening either way.

Unfortunately the mixed messages folks are getting when they phone in, are typical of the problems experienced when HMV were live (as in nobody knows what's going on). I don't mean it to sound like a dig as I feel for the staff but it's the truth.

I kept my pre-orders for RE, Skyfall, Looper and Taken 2 as I don't know for certain if/when these will be picked up by other retailers (barring Looper), and I've pre-ordered them on CC so I should be covered should any real issues arrise (damaged steels, lost in post etc.). I'm also giving HMVs creditors a good reason to push for honoring the pre-orders as the more people that cancel then the more risk there is of the Steelbooks going elsewhere or into oblivion.

Thanks for sharing the info , previously you had said 'its' official' but you didn't elaborate on why? hence my post :D

The email suggested you contacted them, but you're saying you hadn't ? So may be we will all get similar emails soon...

A software engineer never assumes when they say "it's official".
Facts only.

My local HMV has stopped trading and shut it's doors abruptly for the last time yesterday evening. :(

There's a notice on the door saying the usual 'not sure if or when they will be open again'. I'm not sure if it is the same with ALL the Irish stores?

Looks the the end for sure over here :(

Its interesting if they choose to close stores down.
The administrators are either gonna have a firesale online or instore.
Maybe they are planning having it online?

Or are they waiting to see how discussions with potential buyers get along before making that decision?

The thing is, the Irish stores were one of the groups that were to be outside of the insolvency process. So it looks like they never really had a chance.

It seems Deloitte/Dolittle are the harbingers of doom, once they have you in their grasp, it's basically over.

Ive also just been on the phone with a very nice woman who confirmed that all existing pre-orders on HMV.com have been cancelled.

So gutted for all the people who are going to lose their jobs because of this. :(

*phew* I had ordered The Dark Knight, Spiderman & Resident Evil steels from HMV.com.hk only days before this announcement. Lucky for me that movies just arrived. I was going to order a couple of other titles until I saw this.

As mentioned, I really feel for the employees. I've been made redundant twice in my life and it is a horrible, horrible feeling.

Added a note in the OP that HMV has told several members that all pre-orders have been cancelled. If this changes after all, we'll update this main thread.
