"Cross Sale on CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-rays, box sets and games across 230 stores and online comes just weeks after the traditional Boxing Day sale.

Last month the company admitted it is likely to breach its banking covenant - throwing the entertainment retailer's financial future into doubt.

A failure to fulfil lending requirements often signals a company is close to administration, retail analyst Robert Clark told Sky News.

"A lot becomes clear after Christmas - the sale suggests that they didn't have a good one and are trying to reel in as much cash to tie things over," he said.

"I’m not sure how much time they’ve got. I don’t think they’ll be able to sway their bankers. Financial institutions are less likely to show patience in this climate."

But HMV’s chief executive Trevor Moore said in December that closing more stores or placing the business into administration was not "part of our plan" and that the firm was in "constructive discussions" with banks about its performance.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told Sky News the Blue Cross Sale was not unusual for this time of year.

"Normally we'd look to run a multi-buy campaign of some kind at this time of year, but we thought we'd freshen our promotional mix up a bit and try something a bit different that will hopefully stand out from all the other sale offers on the high street right now," he said.

The retailer has taken a huge hit in the face of competition from online retailers like Amazon and Play.

But analysts argue that HMV has failed to reinvent itself in the last 15 years and invest in its stores to keep up with the modern technology revolution.

In December, despite numerous promotions,it announced total sales had fallen 13.5%, while like-for-like sales were down 10.2% in the six months to October 27.

HMV reported a loss before tax of £37.3m - an improvement on the £48.1m loss over the same period the year before. But net debt at the 91 year-old company increased from £163.7m to £176.1m.-bank-deadline."

Just a note to advise that both of the former HMV.com customer helpline numbers in the OP are now defunct.

The administrators can be reached on the 0207 3030700 number.

And I can also confirm that all pre-orders are definitely cancelled.

So only one person has had the cancellation email?

I asked the girl on the administrator helpline whether emails confirming cancellation of pre-orders would be sent out, and she said probably not. I think that's because pre-orders are not being cancelled individually but voided en masse as part of the general suspension of all online trading.

So I wouldn't necessarily expect to hear anything. The orders might stay on their system but just not go any further.

0207 303 0700 for anyone wanting to confirm for themselves.

Is it crazy of me to think those orders would be fulfilled if HMV do indeed get bought and basically just come back from the dead?

It's not as though the distributors are just going to tip all those brand-new steelbooks in a river somewhere.

Surely they're pretty much just sitting in a warehouse somewhere gathering dust with our names on them?

Yep, I think that's exactly where they'll be until the distributor can clear them all off to retailers like Amazon, Zaavi etc. They'll have to offload the stock somewhere now that it's not going to HMV anymore.

Zavvi and Amazon have the Looper steelbook on pre-order-I would assume having worked for HMV sometime ago that the Skyfall steelbook is already produced and will make an appearance somewhere-France is getting a version so I would assume it's being made en masse...

Truly a shame about HMV but the writing has been on the wall since 2008/09

ohh no , im gutted , I had £67 in my e-wallet . I suppose ive lost that now , devastated for the hmv brand and workers , my fav shop ever , worries me we are going to lose uk steelbooks now and with play.com leaving in march , maybe amazon will stop free posting with no big on-line stores now.

As has been the case in other takeovers, I have to agree that a private investment firm will buy them, if they are to be saved at all.

£67.
I'm not gonna say what I got..
Still they were purchased on amex so section 75 should cover me.

Section 75 only covers purchases of £100 and upwards. Amex run a refund protection scheme (commonly called the chargeback system in the UK), but not all cards and accounts are protected, so I'd get onto them asap and make sure you're covered. Hopefully you'll be fine.

Yes and my voucher purchase way way over £100.

They offering them at 20% less than the value. I couldn't resist.
