"Cross Sale on CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-rays, box sets and games across 230 stores and online comes just weeks after the traditional Boxing Day sale.

Last month the company admitted it is likely to breach its banking covenant - throwing the entertainment retailer's financial future into doubt.

A failure to fulfil lending requirements often signals a company is close to administration, retail analyst Robert Clark told Sky News.

"A lot becomes clear after Christmas - the sale suggests that they didn't have a good one and are trying to reel in as much cash to tie things over," he said.

"I’m not sure how much time they’ve got. I don’t think they’ll be able to sway their bankers. Financial institutions are less likely to show patience in this climate."

But HMV’s chief executive Trevor Moore said in December that closing more stores or placing the business into administration was not "part of our plan" and that the firm was in "constructive discussions" with banks about its performance.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told Sky News the Blue Cross Sale was not unusual for this time of year.

"Normally we'd look to run a multi-buy campaign of some kind at this time of year, but we thought we'd freshen our promotional mix up a bit and try something a bit different that will hopefully stand out from all the other sale offers on the high street right now," he said.

The retailer has taken a huge hit in the face of competition from online retailers like Amazon and Play.

But analysts argue that HMV has failed to reinvent itself in the last 15 years and invest in its stores to keep up with the modern technology revolution.

In December, despite numerous promotions,it announced total sales had fallen 13.5%, while like-for-like sales were down 10.2% in the six months to October 27.

HMV reported a loss before tax of £37.3m - an improvement on the £48.1m loss over the same period the year before. But net debt at the 91 year-old company increased from £163.7m to £176.1m.-bank-deadline."

I'm really nervous. I made an order the day before they took the website offline. I received dispatch emails for all of the items. They haven't shown yet, which is probably normal considering HMV's delivery times and also the snowy weather. I'm still crapping myself that they won't arrive though. For some reason I don't believe that an item is really dispatched when they send you those emails.

i dont know if anyone has posted this but according to martin lewis at moneysavingexpert.com you can redeem your vouchers for hmv at face value at asda and tesco but check the websites and there is another one the online Musicgiftsuk .com will accept them at half the face value.

Interesting stuff there. Hope it comes through. I've noticed Tesco as of late being very expensive on the little stock that they have.

Also noticed HMV being cheaper than ASDA on new releases which was strange. Even for a £1 dearer I still bought from HMV for the last 6 months.

Was trying to think of ways, the Hmv model could be changed should a buyer be found. Most people would buy instore if they were about or just slightly higher than amazon. They could do with looking at amazon's price and the postage for getting it to a person fast. I.e. price and first class delivery. So if amazon are stocking a new title at 16.99 and 1.49 charge to get to person in 1-2 days, Hmv could do with selling it for £17.99. The person at home could then use the click and collect service to see if their local Hmv has it. If they have it, reserve it and then go and pick it up. Customer is happy they got what they wanted early, cheaper and in top notch condition. Release week specials. I believe they work well for futureshop.

But once in the store, they need to attract that customer to buy something else.
Another avenue is to pray on the kids. If a big children's release comes out, plant load of merchandise around it. If the parent is in the store and sees it they might be interested. If the child is actually there at the weekend, they'll want it. That is something amazon try and push well.

Pure points are rubbish, let's face it. Give people what they want. More DVDs , blus you buy you get points which turn into £5 off a new chart title or something like that. A nice nirvana guitar sounds nice but who wants to spend money to get. 250,000 points.

The dark knight rises promotion was a nice idea. Free goody bags given out to first 50 customers. They could look to do more on that. It's free tat the movie studios give them anyway.

That's my opinion anyway, the high street isn't dead just yet,

ricster - totally agree about pure points. The amount you had to spend in order to redeem for anything decent was ridiculous. I redeemed points once and still ended up with 90,000 at the time they announced administration. I actually emailed them a few weeks back to suggest they review their rewards system. I received a response from them saying they were currently looking into a rewards system which would be more appealing to all customers including those who don't have online access. I'm not sure that was entirely true haha.

I fear this post may have been missed. Thanks for the info, Alan!

Tesco prices are becoming a joke, I will not be buying from them

Just called HMV, sounds like something they have been asked a lot over the past few days, the guy on the phone said all pre-orders are canceled and I wouldn't be charged.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but Zavvi are also stocking the Looper steelbook at a cheaper price. Worth checking out.

Well, right now the future is looking brighter for them.
It seems extremely likely they will survive. Yippee!
An organization over 90 years old is proving it's value to all concerned.

And regarding steelbooks and IMO:
People here may dis' HMV in comparing it to other retailers, but the quality of their Steelbooks outstrip any other retailer in the UK.
Of all my steels, the best and most valuable come from HMV and Futureshop. Nobody else comes close to these two for me.
