"Cross Sale on CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-rays, box sets and games across 230 stores and online comes just weeks after the traditional Boxing Day sale.

Last month the company admitted it is likely to breach its banking covenant - throwing the entertainment retailer's financial future into doubt.

A failure to fulfil lending requirements often signals a company is close to administration, retail analyst Robert Clark told Sky News.

"A lot becomes clear after Christmas - the sale suggests that they didn't have a good one and are trying to reel in as much cash to tie things over," he said.

"I’m not sure how much time they’ve got. I don’t think they’ll be able to sway their bankers. Financial institutions are less likely to show patience in this climate."

But HMV’s chief executive Trevor Moore said in December that closing more stores or placing the business into administration was not "part of our plan" and that the firm was in "constructive discussions" with banks about its performance.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told Sky News the Blue Cross Sale was not unusual for this time of year.

"Normally we'd look to run a multi-buy campaign of some kind at this time of year, but we thought we'd freshen our promotional mix up a bit and try something a bit different that will hopefully stand out from all the other sale offers on the high street right now," he said.

The retailer has taken a huge hit in the face of competition from online retailers like Amazon and Play.

But analysts argue that HMV has failed to reinvent itself in the last 15 years and invest in its stores to keep up with the modern technology revolution.

In December, despite numerous promotions,it announced total sales had fallen 13.5%, while like-for-like sales were down 10.2% in the six months to October 27.

HMV reported a loss before tax of £37.3m - an improvement on the £48.1m loss over the same period the year before. But net debt at the 91 year-old company increased from £163.7m to £176.1m.-bank-deadline."

Well, right now the future is looking brighter for them.
It seems extremely likely they will survive. Yippee!
An organization over 90 years old is proving it's value to all concerned.

And regarding steelbooks and IMO:
People here may dis' HMV in comparing it to other retailers, but the quality of their Steelbooks outstrip any other retailer in the UK.
Of all my steels, the best and most valuable come from HMV and Futureshop. Nobody else comes close to these two for me.

Great stuff, I've always thought somebody would save them and I am sure it will happen, some of the HMV releases have been superb and believe it or not I have received 12 steel books through the post and not one was damaged, maybe just lucky....

I'll check when I go in tomorrow, I've got a few of those taking up space in my wallet so would be great if they're taking them again too.

Negative on the £5 off £35 voucher, not taking them in Piccadilly Circus. They are taking gift cards though.

They have still not officially said that pre-orders were canceled. :(

I do not really want to get 2 copies of Looper and Skyfall

HMV: Restructuring specialist Hilco takes control of retailer

Restructuring specialist Hilco has taken effective control of music and DVD retailer HMV.

Hilco, which already owns HMV Canada, has bought the debt of HMV from the group's lenders, Lloyds and Royal Bank of Scotland.

The debt deal gives Hilco effective control of HMV which fell into administration last week.

HMV has been hit by competition from online rivals, supermarkets, and illegal music and film downloads.

HMV's estimated debt was around £176m, but Hilco is believed to have paid much less than this to acquire it because the retail chain is in administration.

Although Hilco does not yet officially own HMV, the debt deal gives it effective control of the music and DVD chain.

An industry group of music labels and film studios, including Universal Music and Sony, were reported on Monday to favour a buyout of HMV by Hilco.

Hilco bought out HMV Canada from parent HMV group in 2011 for £2m, and this history means suppliers are likely to give a Hilco-owned HMV in the UK more favourable credit terms.

In Canada, Hilco said the support of HMV's key suppliers had been of "critical importance" to the business's performance.

HMV has 223 UK stores in total, and a workforce of about 4,000.

The music, DVD and games retailer went into administration last Tuesday.

Hilco was not immediately available to comment.

After telling so many people over the phone that all pre-orders were definitely cancelled, I don't see how they could possibly go ahead and process them now.

That's even if they managed to get any stock in the first place, which is pretty unlikely seeing as they're currently unable to pay for it.

I had pre-ordered the Skyfall steelbook at HMV on Jan 4, but I wish to cancel it, since I have placed an order with Amazon.fr, but the HMV site won't respond (though there is a message as pointed out by another member in this thread). I'm afraid my card will be charged because I received no confirmation of order cancellation :ohno:. What to do now?
