"Cross Sale on CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-rays, box sets and games across 230 stores and online comes just weeks after the traditional Boxing Day sale.

Last month the company admitted it is likely to breach its banking covenant - throwing the entertainment retailer's financial future into doubt.

A failure to fulfil lending requirements often signals a company is close to administration, retail analyst Robert Clark told Sky News.

"A lot becomes clear after Christmas - the sale suggests that they didn't have a good one and are trying to reel in as much cash to tie things over," he said.

"I’m not sure how much time they’ve got. I don’t think they’ll be able to sway their bankers. Financial institutions are less likely to show patience in this climate."

But HMV’s chief executive Trevor Moore said in December that closing more stores or placing the business into administration was not "part of our plan" and that the firm was in "constructive discussions" with banks about its performance.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told Sky News the Blue Cross Sale was not unusual for this time of year.

"Normally we'd look to run a multi-buy campaign of some kind at this time of year, but we thought we'd freshen our promotional mix up a bit and try something a bit different that will hopefully stand out from all the other sale offers on the high street right now," he said.

The retailer has taken a huge hit in the face of competition from online retailers like Amazon and Play.

But analysts argue that HMV has failed to reinvent itself in the last 15 years and invest in its stores to keep up with the modern technology revolution.

In December, despite numerous promotions,it announced total sales had fallen 13.5%, while like-for-like sales were down 10.2% in the six months to October 27.

HMV reported a loss before tax of £37.3m - an improvement on the £48.1m loss over the same period the year before. But net debt at the 91 year-old company increased from £163.7m to £176.1m.-bank-deadline."

I'm pretty sure that some of the Universal 100th Anniversary Steelbooks have turned up in HMV stores this week. So much for them not getting any new stock. I wouldn't be surprised if they were going to sell their remaining exclusives in store and have diverted all stock allocated to the website to stores. I'm sure we would have heard something about those titles by now, but there's been nothing which maybe supports the in store exclusive theory.

Apparently on Monday they were selling new release blu-rays. Also taking preorders in some stores.

That's a very bad period for DVD and CD retailers. I have learned today that Virgin Megastores are now in a state of suspension of payments too.

30 stores in the whole France... More than 1.000 employees will be fired if no asset stripper pops up in the next 4 months.

Keep your Virgin exclusive preciously (Bolt, Sherlock Holmes, Terminator Salvation, etc...), because there won't be any other ;)

I posted this in the Skyfall thread:

Also, a few people (including myself) in the BD forums have been stating that despite items bought (and paid for) being despatched to us (in my case 14th Jan) just before it was announced that they (HMV) were going into administration, we still hadn't received the items, the following post was found by a forum member today from another site:

To follow on from this, someone over at the AV Forums (via the Deloitte Facebook page) saw the following which was updated (supposedly) on Friday:

Pre-paid items – internet

If you have ordered an item over the internet and it is paid for, it will be delivered over the next seven days.

wasn't that because TNT refused to pick up items due to not being paid? So effectively they've been picked and packed but just laying in the warehouse waiting to be collected.

Yep. The comment is not referring to pre-orders, only those items already ordered and paid for immediately prior to HMV folding. That doesn't include any of the forthcoming steelbook releases.

It also won't include items which were not in stock. Anything instock at time of ordering and money being taken will be delivered by end of next week, anything out of stock at the time obviousley will have not had a dispatch email and would not be included in the processed and dispatched order.

And at this time no out of stock items will be coming in stock to fulfill orders placed prior to 15th Jan.

Ultimately the Administrators have to let it take new release stock otherwise no-one will go there and that would be commercial suicide. How they get the new release stock to the stores is another matter, lines of credit extended etc. Don't forget it's in Administration NOT Liquidation.

Picked up a few more items on my slipcover & steelbook hunt. HMV Liverpool unfortunately are NOT getting new stock at the moment. A bit of a let down. Still got some stuff.

Also treated myself to something special

WIll post pics when I get it ;)

Store may get the stock directly but HMV do not have a central distribution centre for stores so stock for online part of HMV is seperate and they are not getting any new stock at this current time so orders online are not being fulfilled if they were previously out of stock at time of ordering prior to Jan 15th.
