"Cross Sale on CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-rays, box sets and games across 230 stores and online comes just weeks after the traditional Boxing Day sale.

Last month the company admitted it is likely to breach its banking covenant - throwing the entertainment retailer's financial future into doubt.

A failure to fulfil lending requirements often signals a company is close to administration, retail analyst Robert Clark told Sky News.

"A lot becomes clear after Christmas - the sale suggests that they didn't have a good one and are trying to reel in as much cash to tie things over," he said.

"I’m not sure how much time they’ve got. I don’t think they’ll be able to sway their bankers. Financial institutions are less likely to show patience in this climate."

But HMV’s chief executive Trevor Moore said in December that closing more stores or placing the business into administration was not "part of our plan" and that the firm was in "constructive discussions" with banks about its performance.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told Sky News the Blue Cross Sale was not unusual for this time of year.

"Normally we'd look to run a multi-buy campaign of some kind at this time of year, but we thought we'd freshen our promotional mix up a bit and try something a bit different that will hopefully stand out from all the other sale offers on the high street right now," he said.

The retailer has taken a huge hit in the face of competition from online retailers like Amazon and Play.

But analysts argue that HMV has failed to reinvent itself in the last 15 years and invest in its stores to keep up with the modern technology revolution.

In December, despite numerous promotions,it announced total sales had fallen 13.5%, while like-for-like sales were down 10.2% in the six months to October 27.

HMV reported a loss before tax of £37.3m - an improvement on the £48.1m loss over the same period the year before. But net debt at the 91 year-old company increased from £163.7m to £176.1m.-bank-deadline."

Just went into my local HMV to see if there were any cheap bargains. Prices haven't been lowered and the only steelbook they have is 3 copies of The Hunger Games, priced at £28.00 - HMV deserve to go down!

Shocking price that!

I'm not sure why but there seems to be a variation in prices from store to store. Most stores I've been in recently have had Hunger Games for £22, some £25 and one last week had it at £18.

Same for Cabin In The Woods... most have been £22, but HMV Selfridges was selling it for £14.

On a side note, they appear to be selling Cabin In The Woods sealed now, and sticking the new disc on the outside with that god awful security tape.

HMV's Twitter is active again, but their tweets are actually quite shocking...

We're tweeting live from HR where we're all being fired! Exciting!! #hmvXFactorFiring
There are over 60 of us being fired at once! Mass execution, of loyal employees who love the brand. #hmvXFactorFiring
Sorry we've been quiet for so long. Under contract, we've been unable to say a word, or -more importantly - tell the truth #hmvXFactorFiring

Would the account be hacked? EEK!
More like an angry ex employee who still has the log in details. If HMV knew they were planning on firing folk, then they probably should have thought about changing the password to their Twitter account before sacking the guys that ran it for them.

Apparently they posted a few more surprising tweets, but they were all quickly removed before I got the chance to read them.

EDIT - An image of the tweets is posted below...

HMV cuts 190 jobs across head office and HMV's distribution network.

HMV cuts 190 jobs including Kenyon, Pinder; Twitter account vents frustration

Around 60 staff at HMV have just been told that they have lost their jobs.

The news comes from HMV’s head of technology and games Ewan Pinder, who is amongst the casualties.

“The last two years at HMV have been a blast,” he said on Twitter. “Now to the future!! Hope it all works out for the team that remains. First batch now gone and questions being fielded. Clearly very upsetting and unhappy.”

Pinder confirmed that around 60 workers were currently at the retailer’s head office to be given the bad news.

MCV also understands that chief financial officer Ian Kenyon has gone. However, the games team remains largely intact although the company’s tablet PC buyers have gone, suggesting a move away from the sector.

It is expected that Deloitte will announce further store closures and store staff job losses in the coming hours.

UPDATE: Administrator Deloitte has reportedly confirmed 190 job losses across head office and HMV's distribution network.

HMV's official Twitter account posted a number of messages on the subject before they were removed. They can be found below:

A lot of people have been saying this whole thing crashed Twitter earlier with folks rushing in to share their two cents. Someone else (another employee) has now taken over the Twitter account and tweeted the following...

Something else some of you may be interested in... here is the Twitter account (link) of the person who made those first few tweets about HMV sacking hundreds of people.

She explained through her own account why she did it...

It's been an amazing two and a bit years with hmv! (Only 1 & 1/2 officially) Such a shame it had to end on that note. Someone had to speak! I would apologise for the #hmvXFactorFiring tweets but I felt like someone had to speak. As someone without a family to support/no mortgage, I felt that I was the safest person to do so. Not to mention, I wanted to show the power of Social Media to those who refused to be educated. Just to set something straight, I did not ‘hijack’ the hmv twitter account. I actually assumed sole responsibility of Twitter & Facebook over two years ago, as an intern. When asked (this afternoon), I gladly provided the password to head office. I also set another member of staff up as a manager on Facebook, and removed myself from the admin list. I didn’t resist any requests to cooperate. Since my internship started, I worked tirelessly to educate the business of the importance of Social Media – not as a short-term commercial tool, but as a tool to build and strengthen the customer relationship, and to gain invaluable real-time feedback from the consumers that have kept us going for over 91 years. While many colleagues understood and supported this, it was the more senior members of staff who never seemed to grasp its importance. I hoped that today's actions would finally show them the true power and importance of Social Media, and I hope they're finally listening. Now, I should probably go and hide for a while...Thank you so much for your supportive tweets! Much love to the hmv staff & customers.
