Yes, I find 3D to be a childish gimmick.
I said 12 years old, so random I know, but when I think of people getting excited by 3D itself, or clamoring for it, it could be a bit younger than that. Thomas Evans wasn't doing that, he was just reporting the lack of a (non-existant) 3D disc. I wasn't insulting him (especially someone with such a cool first name), just commenting on how it seems we need to have 3D for everything now, with 3D re-releases, 3D conversions in post-production to grab more money (not that many films shot in 3D are that spectacular or different from conversions in post), and of course the Blu-ray situation where retailers are happy to charge 5 euros/dollars more for a 3D disc.
You're right, of course it's not 95%, it's actually 94,47%, I should have fact-checked that statistical metaphor to emphasize my personal opinion about how most films don't need 3D but have it anyway because $.
What's wrong with "how x is bad because of y"? That's one of the ways I and people in general try to make a point.Just because you disagree doesn't mean that's whining.
I recently saw The Walk in 3D (great film - unless other people disagree). While 3D was interesting in some sequences (the ones with wires have depth, the hard candy scene, or the security cable falling "towards" the viewers), when I think back about the film I don't see it as necessary over two hours, just a few scenes really benefiting from it. I'd rather have brighter colors and not paying extra dough, instead.
You're right, 3D did bring something to that film (GotG stands out from all the other Marvel films in many other aspects, too).
I'm not saying 3D is pointless every time. I'm sure it will work great with Star Wars, for instance.
It's just that in general, it seems 3D is the rule for every PG-13 big-budget movie*, not the exception (Nolan's films, old franchises like Mission Impossible, James Bond, Fast & Furious), and it should be the other way around: have 3D only when it actually brings something to the experience.
I was thinking that the Hunger Games was a notable tentpole movie not in 3D, but Mockingjay Part II was released in 3D (the previous three films weren't). Btw, out of the top 22 movies of the past 365 days, only seven weren't released in 3D : American Sniper (small-ish $58M budget, rated R), Spectre, Furious 7, Mission Impossible 5, Straight Outta Compton (small budget, rated R), Pitch Perfect 2 (small budget), and 50 Shades of Gray (small budget, rated R). Unless you have a director/producer with serious clout, a franchise that got very popular without 3D or surprise small-budget hits, studios plague big movies with that gimmick.
* And 3D is also the rule for 99% of animated films coming from big US studios - boo, another non-factual statistical figure used to make a point(about how 3D is targeting "persons of a young age"
).
Now, about Iron Man 2, I ordered with @dLux's 10% code (thanks!), since I don't have it in DVD or Blu-ray. I wasn't in the steelbook game when the Play.com version was released. But yeah, generic background behind Iron Man and War Machine is a disappointment, smells like a quick copy/paste job.

There have been some terrible 3D films and a lot of them are marvel
If you have the right tv, the marvel films look amazing in 3D.
Canceled mine. I like this more than the artwork on Iron Man 3 but they both needed something to distinguish them as a set, they are too different in style. I would have been happy with this same design but with a different pose and suit on 1 and 3.
Individually It's cool but as a set for me, i don't see them looking great together.

FYI "Iron Man 1" is 'live' to order on Cyber Monday (this coming Monday) at 12 noon so perfectly possible to have all the new lenti steelbook releases, financies permitting, to make a great-looking mini set of eight.
(the other 'missing' lenti steelbook "Captain America" is 'live' the same,day but at 9AM to complete the tally of eight.

Maybe to anyone with eye sight. The original is one of the best steels ever made, stunning art, heavy gloss finish. This is just matte junk with poor art!
It's total nonsense to even talk about how good or how bad this steelbook is when it hasn't even been dispatched yet and nobody has seen 'live' picture let alone have it in-hand !
You cannot judge a lenti steelbook from a mock-up, not by any stretch of the imagination.
Bash it when it arrives by all means, if you must, but hold your horses until then because anything else is ridiculous.

Virkia we have seen evidence of what 4 of these look like already aswel as Agent Carter so I think people will have a good enough judgement on whether they will/might like this or not!
It's not like they released iron man and captain America months ago and have had enough time to take feedback into account and make things better for the rest. They have all been put into production at the same time except avengers assemble which they still didn't work off the bad feedback!
I think the actual image of iron man looks silly on that background personally but will still look forward to pictures to see if it surprises me

But you don't own a glossy steel with a lenticular? (I'm pretty sure I read somewhere) so how would you know.
My French hobbit lenti has an amazing looking steelbook behind it and much more vibrant than these so far (and I don't mind the new winter soldier Steelbook but it is very dark)
Matte is fine when it's done well, not dark washed out images.
I find matte works good on old school artwork for older films or classy films whereas gloss is an all rounder IMO
