Watched it last night (advanced screening). I think that it's another extremely well-done entry in the MI series. It's pretty tough to go wrong with Tom Cruise taking the helm as Ethan Hunt, but then throw in Jeremy Renner--and Pegg, Rhames and the sultry Rebecca Ferguson--and now you're cooking with gas. There were a couple of scenes that really stood out to me. One takes place at the opera. While I don't care for the opera, the action of that scene backed against the melodic sounds of the opera taking place on stage was thrilling. The other scene was the driving sequence. And while some may complain about the sometimes jarring splice between practical and CGI in that sequence, I thought that the stunts and the overall direction of the scene was very unique. It was one of the more entertaining driving scenes that I've seen in a movie in a couple of years.

For me, I thought the movie started to drag just a bit in the second half (but I was a little bit tired even before going into the theater), but the performances from Cruise, Renner and Rebecca Ferguson were solid and that kept me engaged. Throw in a fun script and the dynamic, orchestral soundtrack (it is Mission: Impossible, after all) and you've got a hit. If you want to compare it to the earlier entry in the Mission: Impossible series, then I would say Ghost Protocol edges this one out. But that's only very slightly, I thought Ghost Protocol was an amazing movie. I choose not to think in terms of "which one was better" and instead choose to think that Rogue Nation simply took the baton that Ghost Protocol handed it and just kept sprinting. I highly recommend that people go and see this movie.:thumbs::thumbs:

(And if you're wavering about seeing in theaters vs. waiting until bluray--check it out in the theater. If you're able, then definitely go for a large-format screen and Dolby Atmos. This is one of those movies that is definitely worth a trip to theater.)

I agree that both the opera scene and the chase sequence were amazing. Especially the little comedic moments thrown into both. There were a couple times where it started to slow down a bit, but never for too long. Alec Baldwin was a great addition to the cast for this one. And we gotta make Rebecca Ferguson a star. She is very talented and beautiful.

So throughout last week we started from the beginning and watched MI 1-4 ready for this yesterday.... just to get ourselves prepared :D

Really really enjoyed MI5, I must admit I have quite the man-crush on Tom Cruise. This one was a massive step up from MI4, with some great set pieces and some good tense moments. The comedic relief was also good and didn't feel forced, something which I felt was forced in MI4.

My rankings of all the movies -

MI3
MI
MI5
MI4
MI2

Great, solid movie. The highlights besides the airplane sequence is the opera house scene and the motorcycle chase scene. Tom Cruise was great as usual and Rebecca Ferguson is an awesome addition. I would go as far to say she’s the second best character in the entire franchise after Cruise. She has the sex appeal of a mature woman and was very fluid in action. You can tell she trained for six months from her natural movements in fight scenes. Simon Pegg was great too and it was really more of a partner movie between him and Cruise, rather than a team movie.

I still like Ghost Protocol a little better because the Dubai set piece and the superior team chemistry. Rogue Nation had a great amount of action and good bad guy in Sean Harris; but it didn’t hit the team concept as well as Ghost Protocol and there were a few cliché moments. They definitely need to retire or tone down the mask reveals because its losing its effectiveness. Overall this is one of the best movies of the summer and it’s highly recommended to watch in theaters.

My current Mission Impossible film rankings are: Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation, MI:1, MI:2 (John Woo biased) and MI:3. But all are good to great movies.

I absolutely loved this film. I might go as far as saying it has been my favorite film of 2015 so far. Rebecca Ferguson was a welcome addition and I hope she makes MI:6. My two favorites in the franchise are this and Ghost Protocol but I have to give Rogue Nation the edge because I felt the villain was stronger.
