How many people open their Steelbooks when they buy them or do you just leave them sealed.

So far i have 13 Steelbooks and have opened 3 i opened Angels and Demons,Inglorious Bastards and District 9.

I fear if i open my pirates and nightmare before christmas ones i will have to modify them to be able to put the discs in and not have them in a sleeve

ok so does anyone know what would cause something like what happened to "Sigills" steel book in post #109 ?

And by the way close to 100 steelbooks here... All Open... :)

It almost looks like a bug or beetle was chewing on it. The metal could have been contaminated by rust before the processing of the steelbook and over time could lead to sporadic indents in the steel. Since it was sealed in a poly bag all that time the chances are slim that it saw any kind of moister unless steam ventured over to where his steelbooks were. These are just some of the things that come to mind when I saw those pics.

^^^ interesting thoughts.... quite possible. I sure hope this doesn't have anything to do with cold weather....

I doubt that just plain ole' cold weather will harm them. Moisture, precipitation, steam. Those would be the culprits of rust. Make sure you don't have a water radiated heater blowing on your steelies, or a humidifier or something similar. :ohno:

Unopened steelbooks aren't very fun to look at. I open them all. Plus I only want one copy of each movie to avoid clutter.

Looks awesome Steelbook 86! I don't know what happened to that IB steelbook but i was gutted about it. I have never had any other steels do that but I have had some other steels that have been stored in polysleeves get some minor wear marks. I presume that is just general wear over time.

Yeah it is very strange, I have never seen any other steels with those problems. I have noticed that I have only ever had issues with matt Steelbooks and never sealed ones or ones with a glossy finish. I keep them stored on a shelf away from moisture and steam so ive still no idea why it happened?!

Yeah hrm... That is a mystery. Has it just been on the blue banner on the matte finished titles or has it appeared on other colors as well? It looks like it only appears where the bend is and not anywhere else but then all you really show is the top part so IDK. It is a mystery, that's for sure.

Yeah the IB was 100% mint apart from the top of the blue banner. The other one that had a few very slight marks i noticed was the T2 Japanese edition. I did buy that open though so i'm not sure how it was stored before? I haven't had any issues since, fingers crossed!

I've opened every one of my 69 Blu-ray Steelbooks (and all of my 53 DVD SteelBooks as well). I usually photograph them, and then place them in polysleeves, then put them in my display bookcase. Only one of them damaged when we had a large earthquake last year. The bookcase fell over and sprayed my Blu's all over the floor, District 9 UK got dented on the side but amazingly that was the only casualty :D

Thanks for the heads-up on that though. :) I'll make sure to keep an eye open for that from now on, on all of my steels. :ohno:

Yeah I figured as much but thought I would throw it out there and see what others think.

I agree with you though it has to be something like that to cause that.

Thanks, Sigill. Shame that IB got ruined like that. Hope you found another one. :)

All of my steels are sealed, unless i bought them opened.
should i ever give up steels they would fetch a slightly higher price.
but at 40 steelbooks and counting, i won't be giving up any time soon!

I've got alot of my collection sealed..160 (EEK! how did it get that many)odd, and around 20% open. Mainly due to me just not opening it, or ive got the regular version.
There are some exceptions, to 'if i wanna watch it, i'll open it rule', Sucker punch SDCC, German iron man, Star Trek...but saying that my German iron man may get opened for something very special. Thinking of taking it along to the London comic book convention and getting it signed by Stan Lee...think that's the most valid reason to open a steel ever..lol..:hilarious::hilarious::D:scat::scat:

I got about 73 Steels and every single one has been opened.. :D but I do repack them.

I noticed that some manufacturers use a glue that, after some time, is really hard to remove. I was not able to remove it from my Salt and Green Hornet Steelbook, there are still some residues. So, i prefer to open the steels asap, clean and repack them. Works fine for me.

it's hard to keep beautiful steelbook sealed...very hard... later on I'll open them... For me to enjoy this hobby, I have to be happy with the artwork or else it's pointless... Knowing that I get a dent-free steelbook all around is the ultimate prize in this hobby... it's not the fact that it is sealed. I don't buy steelbook for investment...I make so much more money in my other investment than trying to flip steelbook...

I've opened up all of my steelbooks except 1, scarface. Well I own 2 copies of it so yeah that's why.

Gosh that is one I haven't opened. I think I might just open one since I bought 3 of them on amazon for like $12 each.

The back of it is too beautiful to not open up and look at.
