Open Or Sealed? The Debate

How many people open their Steelbooks when they buy them or do you just leave them sealed.

So far i have 13 Steelbooks and have opened 3 i opened Angels and Demons,Inglorious Bastards and District 9.

I fear if i open my pirates and nightmare before christmas ones i will have to modify them to be able to put the discs in and not have them in a sleeve

i don't know, there's no way anyone's gonna get me to open a SDCC or ROTF or Zombieland

just doesn't really make sense, i'll spend $10 and get a regular blu ray of them to watch...

heck i spent like $35 to get the canadian steelbook release of sucker punch... problem solved, even came with a digital copy disc that worked for my itunes so it's on my ipad... BONUS!

zombieland i've had on dvd for forever, that's all i need

and ROTF is an empty case, so why open it

i open all of mine so i can actually observe them properly and get the full feel and beauty of the steelbooks, plus i watch them, so i open all of my mine. dont see the purpose of leaving them closed unless i was going to sell them.

I open all of my steelbooks. I just prefer them that way. I'll even open a rare steelbook (I opened The Town when I purchased that). I'm not sure I would be so keen to rip the seal off a steel I paid £100 for, but if I've paid a regular amount and it has since risen, I have no regrets as I'm not throwing money away.

That isn't necessarily true, I am a collector and I simply don't like to open my items. I sold a few Steelbooks, but when originally obtained their purpose was just to be in my collection.

Sure, that is true for some folks, but in a general sense you are probably 50/50.

I personally wouldn't open a rare steelbook purely because if it had a dent or any imperfection underneath the shrink wrap it would bug the hell out of me.

I think this is where I got caught up in "sealed" mentality. I have a lot of Blurays already, or digital copies on my HTPC, so dont see the point of opening a lot of steels.

I've got an open inception.de, I have a 1080p rip on my HTPC and I have a sealed FS release, that was pretty hard to obtain.

same thing for public enimies, 720p rip, .DE release (which I will open when I watch the movie) and a sealed FS.

I have the mechanic, Fighter, Batman B, TDK, 2001, 300....... amrays & steels but I don't have an infinite amount of space.

And I'm also of this school of thought, if I paid £10-20 (general retail price) I'll just open it up, but things like FS steels, that I've had to pay a fair bit for or trade some rarez to obtain, I just cant open!

I'm really on the fence, I think the next time I'm feeling brave I'll just open all the ones I want to keep & sell off the stuff I dont (the amrays being prime candidate)

That means opening the Town, inception & Public enimeis FS

It's all about digital streaming and DDLs for viewing pleasure, steelbooks are for display purposes for me, but no one is stopping me from from opening one or two if I choose to, but really there is no need for it as I have everything on 1080ps/720ps on my External HDs connected to my HT through Oppo, I've got best of both worlds

I open them unless there's a rare situation where I have two. For example, I got the Canadian Sucker Punch. Then later got the SDCC version. I kept the SDCC sealed because I had the movie already in Steelbook form.

There is quite a difference from the DVD LE collecting days I don't think there was that much interest in keeping them sealed.

I also agree with digitalbabe that it is interesting that some Laserdisc/DVD releases still hold their value. One example is the Muse Hi-Vision Laserdiscs, they are still very expensive. I have been looking forever for some Back To The Future releases on that format.

I have all my steelbooks opened, only one is still sealed but this is a second item of the same movie. I always opened them because I buy them for my pleasures and I want watch the movie, see all artworks in fact, not through the foil only, simply want touch and feel them in my hands. Also it gives me a chance to checking every steelbook from each side is there are no dents, which is not always possible to see under back cover paper, and eventually apply for a replacement or refund. After that I keep my steelbooks in poly sleeves so they are like new

That really sucks! I figure the only reason not to open them is if your looking to make a profit down the road. But I'm a buyer only. And with the money I spent, they aren't going to sit on a shelf forever. I'm going to enjoy them!

I feel you on that. I definitely want to open mine and actually modify them to be able to hold the right amount of discs and even change the background wallpaper if needed. Then I'll feel like they are even more of a prized possession.

I almost always open mine, but there are strange exceptions. Such as the Black Leather Kill Bill 1&2, as I also have the Yellow JumpSuit version to watch and enjoy, I will probably leave that one sealed.
Ah well, there's no rules to love............

Open or Sealed the old debate There are many different answers to this.

I open about 70-80 percent of my steelz. Its called watching the movie and enjoying the artwork inside Simple as that. What good is a steel with all those silly stickers and ugly shrink wrap around them? Yes it may lose value if you wish to sell them at a later date.

The ones I don't open will be the valuable rare ones which can be used as financial gain and trades later. They will remain sealed with all the stickers etc.

So basically the steelz where I wanna watch the movie and wanna keep I open.
The steelz where I wanna use as a trading chip later I keep sealed.
The steelz I have where I don't like the movie I keep sealed for later trades.

I've opened all my steels. Of course, none of them are exceedingly rare, so it's not like it matters too much anyhow.

Is it smart to open a OOP Steelbook?

I'm bringing this up because I saw a couple pictures of opened Steelbooks that Recently became OOP.. If you didn't have doubles and you knew that your steelbook could SKYROCKET like Iron Man, would you fall into Temptation and rip that sucker open? or would you Keep it safe and just buy the Regular Blu ray version of the movie?

Enjoy your steelbook today because you could be gone tomorrow.

I guess if it skyrockets in the first couple of weeks, you'll know for sure.

But seems like to me, if you're unsure - you have to go old school collector and buy both the steel and the amaray.

That gets expensive quick.

Everyone collects/buys for different reasons. Those reasons will dictate what you do. Personally, no one has told me or assured me I will have a second life when this one ends so Im opening them.
