Why is everyone still so shocked and confused that 2D and 3D is on the same Disc? They're a ton of films that have 2D and 3D on 1 disc avatar being one of them.

I think its because there's no 3D option on the menu. That seems to be the difference.

I've not received mine yet so I'm only going off what others have said, but using my first edition of HTTYD as reference there should be an option at the beginning of the bluray for 2D or 3D.

Pressing the 3D button on your remote is just converting the film to 3D. I can do that to any bluray I own. I can do it to the bloody news on BBC1.

Having both encodes on a single disc means compromising the encoding (lower bit rate) and compromising the extras as well due to lack of space. The PQ can suffer especially for ones shot on film stock.
All 3D discs already have the 2D encode on the Disc but most film studios lock the 2d code and provide a separate 2D disc

There are a few releases were the 3D/2D is on the same Disc
Avatar
Predator
Texas Chainsaw
and a few others releases

I found this to be the case with transformers 4, Once I turned off the 3D I felt the picture quality wasn't as good, now the OCD in me is telling me to buy the 2D only disc!

Ahh ok, I hadn't noticed the option before to be honest but just checked avatar and yeah your right press play and there it is "watch 3D" and "watch 2D" option

Anyone actually tried starting the film, the 3D option on Underworld Awakening didn't appear till you pressed play on the actual feature film.

Strange that, I would have thought that if there was money to be saved by reducing discs studios would choose that option every time!

Its to do with backward compatibility its part of the Blu-ray 3D specification

Most studios though lock the 2D code and release separate Disc as not everyone has a 3D TV or 3D Blu ray player
