People should be used to this steelbook collecting price malarkey now. No buyer is happy with it and every seller loves it.

The fact is, for you to be a collector and really enjoy it you need to be prepared to spend the money either at retail level or the secondary market, money you are comfortable spending.
It doesn't matter how many times it gets raised about a price of a steelbook, whether it's on ebay or via a retailer, nothing will ever change.

Everybody complains about ebay sellers hiking up prices, myself included, and yes my opinion is that it's greed and that's part of human nature to be that way, but at the same time I'm;
a) Aware there's nothing I can so about it, and
b) Smart enough not to spend my own hard earned money on items that are NOT worth the prices they are listed at... in my opinion.

The sellers will argue that it's not greed and it's their perogative to make a few quid as the platform exists to do so. However, same sellers also hate buying at their own prices, which makes me laugh a lot .

Something is only worth its price in the minds of the seller and the buyer happy to buy it. For me it's only worth its price that I bought it at from retail, because that's it's origin. That will be argued of course as no doubt people would raise
years old collectors figures of star wars memorabilia, other other movie 'antiques' sitting in their collection etc, but again, that's their opinion and why I don't collect what they do.

Between greedy sellers and desperate buyers of ebay this magical crazy price has been invented which then in turn puts the same magic in the heads of other sellers, and then that level exists where everybody is chasing after what they genuinely believe is something special (in the end all made from the same ol' material folks) and our domino effect takes off. eBay is the platform to do it and retailers do exactly the same thing through their stores. You're either happy to buy or you're not.

Others who do this selling malarkey hate it when you throw out your opinion about what is "right" or "wrong" about the steelbook collecting community, but it is just that... an opinion, and nobody is right or wrong as it's your own morals/beliefs.

I'm financially comfortably happy to pay for the Collectors edition at retail price... I won't be happy to pay for it on ebay. Even this post will get flack but none of us are going to change our beliefs and you must just spend to your means if you want any real enjoyment out of collecting and that includes standing your ground and passing on an item you are not comfortable paying the price for, even if it ends up selling for triple months later.

Totally spot on mate on all points.

I actually used to work in the industry years ago and for a few months I was working in the Paramount offices around the time the Iron Man Phase 1 steelbooks were being released on Play.com. On the actual release day of those steelbooks, I overheard their operations team discuss how gutted they were that the steelbooks were already selling on ebay for £40. I remember them saying that if they had known, they would’ve charged far more than just £10.99 them. I’m sure other studios took note of that as well at the time and as we all know, steelbooks jumped in price after that.

So really, ebay sellers along with buyers willing to pay their prices may have directly contributed to the increase in what studios charge us for steelbooks.

Studios are only trying to maximise their revenue and they have the right to sell their products for whatever they want. It’s totally up to us whether to spend our cash on them.

I like to think that the serious collectors follow this site so they can get their pre-orders in early so not to miss out and have to pay ebay prices.

Those play.com steels years later still going for crazy prices just because they are floating around ebay at crazy prices. Glad I got mine when I did as they are two of, if not the, best looking ones of all the Iron Man steels.
Going back to that price of £9.99 though, I remember them well being on the play site. I wasn't a big collector then either and was just transitioning, still collecting amarays at that point. If only steels were those prices now, but as you quite rightly pointed out the retailers are absolutely ahead of the curve! That's aside from the specialists such as Blufans, Manta etc that are specific to this hobby.

Reason why those steelbooks was £10.00 was that Play was using a loophole with avoiding Vat by using Channel Islands

Government put an end this as it was been abused by companies to avoid paying tax

https://www.taxation.co.uk/articles/2011-11-09-31631-channel-islands-VAT-loophole-closed

Prices with other retailers was higher for back catalouge releases who was not using channel islands so £10.00 was not normal retail price.

Play ended up closing down 1 year later as they now had to pay vat on profits

they drop the price when they stop selling, and they keep dropping until they are all sold.

the initial price is the top of what they think people are willing to pay. only collectors or fans pay this initial 'collector's tax'... when all the collectors pay their tax, the product will be lowered to a price average jo blogs would likely pay ha

I think 95percent of collectors dont want to pay £30 for a are bones steel, they only do so because they are led to believe the product is limited, they panic buy.

Retailers pay a dealer price with distributors
Retail price is decided on that dealer price
You hope to sell most stock at retail price and reduce to clear only if left with lot of unsold stock
Some releases a retailer makes a loss or break even only as in no profit made

Retailer makes a loss in profit when they reduce in price not the distributor
They still have to pay tax on sales

Most retailers the profit margin with DVD/Blu-ray new releases is only 30% to 40%

Its second hand business you make large profit margins with DVD/Blu-ray

£33 is simply too expensive for a film.

£25/26 for a Steelbook with a 3d disc too, and I will buy.

I have almost all the Marvel ones so far, but I just cannot justify this price sadly, especially as I do not need a 4k version.

I have found the price creep and being almost forced to take a 4k disc a bit irritating. I've resisted a 4k upgrade as it means a new receiver as well as a larger tv and then the old urge to upgrade the collection. I mean, at this point Lucasfilm/Disney might as well charge me monthly for the inevitable re-purchases of Star Wars :D and I know having the most recent Marvel steelbooks in 4k will start nagging away...

:D

Any more infos about this? Do you have any links?
Maybe no 3D here in the UK (retards) but across the channel there will definitely be two options:-

"MAJ le 03 juillet 2019 — Spider-man : Far From Home est désormais précommandable en deux éditions spéciales fnac :
* Une édition steelbook 3D + 2D
* Une édition collector steelbook 4K + 3D + 2D + blu-ray bonus + Gallery Book de 48 pages +Poster + Cartes collector
L’édition collector serait très limitée."

^ This I agree 100%.
Well I sat on the fence and now out of stock = money saved.

Will source outside of the UK for 3d version in steelbook form.

TBH more used to regular size:-

... although I'm sure a massive triangle exists in the same way that a massive violin, double bass, tuba, drum etc. exists:-

As for the rest of the art would be cool to see a wraparound from Meinerding to complement HOMECOMING.
