Here us a slight guide to the way I glossed mine ok here's what I used

A gravity fed spray gun
yvavu2y8.jpg

Then I used some accelerator and clear coat which I use when I spray cars also added is a slight but if thinners I think it's 2 to 1

The steels are wiped over with cleaners I get rid of grime and oil that fingers can lea e and any oils
desuse2y.jpg

Then I spray it in a booth which is heated and has ventilation AND IS HEATED KNOWN AS AN OVEN
Basically it what I use to spray car bits
apuhypa3.jpg

Then spray and leave them to harden at least a day and this will be hard enough to polish to

OH I FORGOTTO ADD A PICTURE OF THE HARDENER AND THE FACT I GET ALL KITTED UP LIKE WALTER WHITE FROM BREAKING BAD ....

WELL A BREATHING MASK AND OVERALLS AS THIS STUFF ISNT GOOD FOR BREATHING IN A CONFINED SPACE

Edited for trading

I'm going to be glossing about 20-30 steelbooks once my lacquer arrives this week.

How long do you leave your steelbooks out to dry before putting them back on the shelf ?

Personally I ended up ignoring the advice on the can and sprayed much closer to ensure a glossier finish - but that meant a much longer drying time of about 2 - 3 hours to be safe. I'd lightly dab a corner with a cocktail stick or something to check whether it's dry. I would also strongly recommend you get a steelbook you don't mind ruining and test it thoroughly to see what method suites you before going onto more valuable ones.

I hope this helps :)

Thanks for the tip.

I had some E Tech Alloy wheel lacquer left in the shed from last year. Enough for about 4-5 coats on my Punisher and Spiderman trilogy steelbook (cheapest matte steelbooks I have in my collection).

Looks really nice in my opinion. Unfortunately my Spiderman attracted a few dust particles which are visible if viewed in different angles but give me a few dust particles and gloss protection over PAINT CHIPS any day of the week !

Can't wait to do the rest of my collection and make them gloss.

And can's will never beat howie's air gun method. There is a day and night difference between 2K air gun lacquer and lacquer from a can. I'm not complaining though. The can method is still a vast improvement and very easy to do.

Here are the new GLOSSED pics. This is a beautiful steelbook. Well done Blufans...

Man that is absolutely gorgeous!

How did you not even get 1 speck of dust on there? or is the camera not picking it up?

I've ordered more E-Tech alloy wheel lacquer after the impressive results of my Spiderman and Punisher steelbooks. But I'm moving on to expensive steels after a few more cheap ones. I want them to be DUST free. How do I do that !?

I'm absolutely livid.

I used Plastikote GLOSS Clear Acrylic spray paint on Daredevil, Terminator (french), The Guest & Robocop steelbooks in one go (yes i'm a twat for doing so).

The coating went on evenly but the finish is absolutely AWFUL, worse than a MATTE finish. It's given it this dull glittery finish.

My E-Tech lacquer that I used on Spiderman and Punisher arrives next week (the ebay seller is slow on delivery) so my question is will spraying lacquer over acrylic gloss sealer be ok ? There is no way i'm accepting the current finish produced from the plastikote acryclic gloss clear sealer.

Here are a couple Raindrop Steelbooks I did for my buddy @kevin63

The Dark Knight Rises with Raindrop

Captain Phillips with Raindrop

I thought I had a better close up picture of the front. I'll see if I can find it. The pictures don't do this one justice!

After adding "spot raindrop" to the splashes on the back:

@howiesteed care to chime In on this situation?

Well I fixed it with my E-Tech lacquer. It shines just like the rest of my other glossed steelbooks but you can clearly feel that the coating is much thicker as it has acrylic gloss underneath. So glad there wasn't any orange peel or other adverse reactions. Mind you I left it to dry PROPERLY after spraying Plastikote acryclic for 5 days before spraying E-Tech lacquer.

Just an update, i've glossed about 20 steelbooks already now.

And yesterday the sun was out.

I put out a piece of large cardboard big enough for 9 steelbooks on top of our garden table. Sprayed up 9 steelbooks at once went indoors for 20 mins until they were touch dry but guess what ???

Came back to find them all on the paving block floor. Just my ****!ng luck. 9 steelbooks chipped, scuffed and dented around the corners, that's £150 down the gutter. I cleaned them, pushed out any minor visible dents to the best of my abilities. And then re-lacquered them all. Now luckily they still look OK. I know I won't be able to sell these anymore but I never had any intention to do so anyway to be honest. I can live with the damages as they are underneath a shiney coating of high gloss lacquer.

Moral of the story. DO NOT RUSH, ENSURE EVERYTHING IS PREPARED. In my case that meant placing 2 bricks on the cardboard so the wind can't blow it to the floor.

That sucks pal, unlucky. I had an incident myself when I first started glossing, though it was only one steel. My canadian 300 steel wasn't fully dried when I went to pick it up and it left a huge fingerprint on the front :OMG: - which is why I warned you to be careful about doing the same earlier in the thread.

I managed to dissolve the gloss, wipe off the residue and hide the mess with an extra thick layer of gloss (it really does hide a multitude of sins!) - I'm glad you managed to salvage yours to some degree. I don't gloss that much now as it is too risky apart from cheap steels, especially the dust particles problem, which is why I'd much prefer that the manufacturers just send them out ALREADY GLOSSED!

That's one reason not to spray outside and also if it's windy the bits would easily get onto the wet lacquer or flies that's why I do it inside

Yep, risky is to say the least.

It's just not worth it. I'm allergic to the fumes and ended up with a chesty cough and ear infection which I had to get steroids for from my GP so I was trying to bulk do them rather than individually. I've managed to do quite a lot now but I won't be anymore unless i'm desperate.

I'm allergic to the fumes! so I have to do it outdoors. And that's with a mask and goggles on. I suffer from eczema and asthma since I was 4 years old.
