I don't mean to rain on the parade and I know folks in the US are really excited now that they will get their own steelbook releases and such but this really is another re-release situation all over again with the exception of 4 of them if Im correct and 1 being a steelbook with same art instead of iron pack. And a lot of defensive posts to justify the re-releases this time around.

Its really sad there are so many re-releases IMO. It ruins the hobby-really. Especially if it starts happening in the biggest consumer market in the world. I really hope that the US will get NEW steelbooks and they (studios) don't just decide to re-release everything all over again because its such a big market and they know they will sell.

Not sure if Im alone in this or what. Im hanging on here but Im really starting to think its a good time to get out while your ahead sort of situation. What's so special about something that everyone has? I know that sounds shallow but isn't that what this was all about... having cool, collectible art work pieces of movies we love that were "special/collectible editions". If every title gets a re-release, and gets a steelbook counterpart to the regular amaray... whats so "special/collectible" any more about em?

Im a sucker for this stuff so I guess Ill probably keep at it, lol, but man re-releases suck. I really hope USA gets NEW steelbook releases moving forward and hopefully ones that are "true exclusives".

Just my thoughts on this wave. Excited that the US is getting steel's but bummed at the re-releases.

While I agree with a lot of what you said I do have to disagree about gettin out while ahead sentiment. Personally while I do have some rares that I spent money on I don't collect for the value, I collect for the collection. Also like ash mentioned below, this was likely a test/hello we exist now buy us run. Also I think of it like this, so many people in the US likely have no clue what a steelbook is. Now they are going to walk into their BB on Tuesday (some BBs already, my local ones are being strict about the 5/29 street date) and see a whole rack of these. Now your going to have a hugge influx of collectors making yours appreciate in value.

Yes it is a little sad that they are just rehashing some waves but honestly isn't that what that canadian wave was in the first place and I have no doubt the US will beign to get new exclusives, with inside art, and clean backs and sometimes they will be different art from other countries and other times it will be the same release as the rest of the world.

steelbook86, your sentiments are echoed by collectors everywhere, more so by those who have been collecting for a while. Again, though the artwork is recycled for many titles in this wave, this is technically NOT a re-release since these titles have never been released before in the US. Yes they were released previously in other countries but to the US collectors, this is the first time. I may be wrong here but many of us long time collectors want to see new artwork for such "re-releases" in a new country. It makes the steelbooks, like you said, something "cool, collectible art work pieces of movies we love." Unfortunately, I believe this is almost impossible in this case because:

- the US G2 line just came online a few weeks ago, meaning test runs and constant quality assessments/adjustments to be expected in its maiden run,
- there is no proven retailer who has sufficient experience in handling these collectibles with a good record of minimizing damaged inventory,
- there is no experience in the supply chain to handle these collectibles during shipping (this wave was shipped together in a giant cardboard box to each store with NO special protection whatsoever), and
- there must be a studio who is willing to "sacrifice" some of their titles for new artwork from a new factory with no proven record of delivery.

I am totally confident there will be day and date new steelbook releases in the US very soon based on what I have seen of this wave. As I have said previously, I believe this wave was a test run to measure the capacity and efficiency of this new line and instead of dumping/burning these steelbooks (missing inside art?), they simply decided to put them out for sale. This may appear to "dilute" the value of almost identical steelbooks in the wild but I see this more as "door prizes" for future collectors as a precursor for those awesome new titles to come in the months ahead. Personally I think this is a great move to make sure those new titles are released in the highest quality and that there is minimal kinks from factory to shelf.

I'm with you I'll pick a few of these up, even though I don't own all of these I will go and pick up about 8-10 of these of movies that I either don't have or that I would like on blu-ray and I will look at is upgradin my DVDs to both blu-ray and to steelbook. As the line gets better and Wreck gets the factory in line (cause we know he has pull on steelbooks :D) we will likely get our own unique and exclusive steels.

Also it would be really cool if this forum could get a unique steel or two. wink wink, nudge nudge

Watch out world the US just entered the game and when you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. :hilarious:

I guess it comes down to why you collect were you collecting to say hey look at me and all the rare stuff you don't have and trying to put a masterpiece collection together that has now been sullied with tons of counterfeits. Or were you collecting because you love movies and you love steelbooks to have your movies in.

I fall in the latter category I love movies, its why I open all my steels because I get them for the movie first (ok my love of steels has also had me buy movies I would have never bought to get the steels so it goes both ways haha) and then I get them because what an awesome way to display something you love in an awesome steelbook. It is something unique to my collection and adds beauty to something I love.

So now to get a bunch of steels I already wanted without having to pay a premium its a glorious day. Plus I think you can still build a unique and beautiful collection even with the rehashes and re-releases. I have a ton of G1 steels you never see on Ebay or in peoples collection since I have been collecting since way back in 2008 when it was all G1 and Dvds. Some of them are Beautiful too. My Apocalypse Now or my Sarah Connor Chronicles or my X3 or my There will Be Blood or my Star Wars the Clone Wars or my Doctor Who season 4 are all gorgeous.

Heck occasionally I think a G1 is prettier than a G2 and it keeps me from buying the G2. Pulp Fiction is such a prime example I already own it in DVD so if I were to get a steel I'd like to get a blu-ray but I am sorry the G1 is so much nicer than the G2 which is so run of the mill and just looks like a normal cover that its hard for me to pull the trigger on it.

I still think you can build a unique and gorgeous collection even with re-releases like this.

I get what everyone is saying^^^ but to me nothing justifies a re-release for "collectible/special edition" items. End of story. I get that its nice for people that missed out etc. but "limited/collectible/special edition" should not be re-released. Ive been collecting since the first north american bluray steelbook I am Legend was released (bought it in store on release day) in 2008 so believe me I get it.

Like you sir dizzy I collect for the movies first and foremost and as such all my steel's are open. Incase anyone thinks Im a troll, lol :

To me there are just too many releases in general (poor art, printed backs, poor titles, etc.) and that add to that the re-releases the hobby is going the way of quantity instead of quality which is I think everyone here would agree is lame.

Anyhow, not trying to stir anything up. Just stating what I was thinking and wasn't sure if I was alone in it or not. I mean where else are you suppose to talk steelbooks if not here right. Enjoy your WB wave folks.

you were able to start collecting early because you have Futureshop. While we have to wait for a stupid G1 to be released if we were lucky. Nobody is telling you have to buy them. But Christ at least now we Americans finally have an option without having to spend a crap load of money to ship. And yes we can now get the steels that we missed out on, and we will take whatever they offer.

Everyone ripped on re-releases (just look at older threads on here) if they showed up anywhere in the world before and once they showed up in the US the tune has changed to defensive and hostile to justify re-releases any which way. I said my 2 cents and I guess I shoulda kept it to myself. Ill just stay out of the thread. Really my OP in this thread was OT anyways.

So i was able to pick about 4 of these up today. I cant say i was to impressed with them. I mean they were 14.99 so they were priced good. I saw discussion earlier in this thread talking about a new factory or something making steelbooks in the US. Maybe it was a distributor heck i dont know. But the 4 steelbooks i got were all made in Denmark it says. Plus the lack of inside art at all was a huge let down. I suppose its a foot in the door for maybe getting more releases and better quality steelbooks. Crossing my fingers.

I don't think you get the point as to why we are so excited. For you it might just be a new lot of re-releases. But for us it signifies the beginning of steelbooks in the U.S.

Would have been nice if they went all out and put brand new art on each steelbook, complete with embossing and lenticular slipcovers. But they didn't, for their first run they put out stock images (excluding Hangover) with no inside art. Keeping their dollars invested to a minimum. Testing the waters.

Jay, please let me know which posts were offensive/defensive/hostile. My intent earlier on was not to be defensive but to celebrate a new opportunity for collectors worldwide. And yes unfortunately this maiden US wave had lots of re-releases but it does not mean that this new G2 line is only going to print re-releases. It simply does not make economic sense to be reprinting old artwork. Personally I have several re-releases in my collection including the DE Sucker Punch and Hangover. I wasn't too excited about them initially but I like them in my collection.

All, please keep the discussion on topic, considerate, and respectful. Personal attacks, rude and berating comments will NOT be tolerated.

Voight, I have opened 4 of the 20 myself and inspected them quite closely for art defects mostly. But I have yet to see anything that says "Made In Denmark" so I would really appreciate it if you can share where on the steelbooks you are seeing that label. For the record, each of the 20 has "Disc Made In Mexico" stamped on the shrink wrap on the back of the steelbook. I am getting old I know but I could not find anywhere on those 4 steelbooks where it says Made In Denmark (LOTR-Fellowship, Green Lantern, 300 and Clash of the Titans).

Why do I feel that this BB/US wave is a waste and sooo much inferior to the mighty FS original releases, really what's the point

Just order from best buy online and have it shipped to you.

they dont ship outside the usa do they?

most people in the uk would like them. im after a few but looking at the steelbooks im put off inception now. but sherlock, shawshank, all 3 lotr, sucker punch and gran torino id like. i wish i could order from best buy as then id pay the exact price and not extra dollars per steel from someone else.

Nope, they just ship inside the US - SixteenVolt420 lives in the US, so that's why I mentioned.

There is currently a group buy going on in the group buy forum, it might have slots left.

i see the point in these being substandard, after all they are priced low. and it keeps the orignal release mroe valuable (which makes sense right?) just like when germany do their re-issues with printed fsk logos instead of stickers.
personally, i would be a little annoyed if the value dropped off my candian book of eli, inception etc. but on the other hand, i would have loved for gran torino and sherlock to have had inside artwork (as i dont like german steels, due to foreign text).
hopefuly, the next run will have inside artwork, and have a different selection of titles.
