How Did Wolverine Become a Time Traveler? ‘Days of Future Past’ Writer Explains

X-Men-Days-of-Future-Past-Comic-Book-Cover.jpg

http://www.slashfilm.com/how-did-wolverine-become-a-time-traveler-days-of-future-past-writer-explains/

Those who’ve read the original issues that make up the Days of Future Past storyline know that, among the many apparent differences between the comic and film tellings of the tale, there’s one huge change that fundamentally changes the story.

In the comic version, it is the young Kitty Pryde who goes back in time in an attempt to prevent the development of a dystopian future in which mutants are savagely hunted. In the forthcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, it is Wolverine who acts as the time-jumping lynchpin. Why the change?

There’s an obvious answer to the question (“duh, Wolverine is the star of these movies”) but there’s also a narrative explanation. Screenwriter Simon Kinberg explains below.

Kinberg told Total Film:
We made the decision for a lot of reasons, some of them obvious and some of them more nuanced, to make it Wolverine who goes back in time. One reason is that he’s the protagonist of the franchise, and probably the most beloved character to a mass audience.

Probably the bigger reason is that when we started thinking about the logistical realities of Kitty’s consciousness being sent back in time, to her younger self, as opposed to her physical body being sent back..it was impossible. Obviously in the book it’s Kitty, but you’re talking about an actress (Ellen Page) who, in the age of Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, would have been negative 20 years old. So we started thinking again, and the first reflex response to that was a character who doesn’t age. Wolverine is the only character who would looks the same in 1973 as he does in the future.

The bigger question is whether or not Kitty Pryde will ever become an A-list character in the X-Men films. She’s been played by three actresses so far, and until we know how Ellen Page (returning to the role after X3) fares in Days of Future Past, it’s too early to know what to expect. Pryde is a fan-favorite comic character for reasons that go far beyond the fact that she’s got a pet dragon, and it would be great to see her get her due on screen.

If Kitty had a proper introduction on screen, the obvious go-to for another “solo” Wolverine movie would be the Kitty Pryde and Wolverine mini-series story from 1984. It’s another tale set in Japan, and which links pretty easily to the story that drove this year’s The Wolverine. But that’s getting too far ahead — let’s see what this film has in store first.

Rogue Cut Out of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’

http://www.slashfilm.com/rogue-cut-out-of-x-men-days-of-future-past/

The overstuffed roster for X-Men: Days of Future Past just got a little bit smaller. Although Anna Paquin‘s Rogue was reported as being part of the sequel all the way back in January, director Bryan Singer now reveals that the character has sadly been cut out of the film altogether. Hit the jump to find out why.

According to EW, Paquin was set for just one scene in the movie — a big rescue sequence featuring Rogue, Magneto (Ian McKellen), Professor X (Patrick Stewart), and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore). The footage was shot early in the production process, but as the film moved into post-production, Singer realized he didn’t have room for it after all.

“Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous,” Singer explained to the publication. “It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.”

The filmmaker stressed that Paquin was not the problem. “She did a fantastic job,” he said. “She was awesome in the sequence. She’s a brilliant actress. I would work with her in a heartbeat.” As for Paquin, Singer says she “completely understood” the move. ”It’s very disappointing, but she’s very professional and she knows that stuff happens, particularly with material you shoot early on in production,” he said. “Films evolve.”

The gigantic cast for X-Men: Days of Future Past has had fans wondering how Singer could possibly find time to service them all in a two-hour film. The fact that Rogue was cut out so easily confirms what we suspected — that some of the stars’ roles will amount to little more than cameos.

Sadly for Rogue fans, this is the second time in recent memory that the heroine has been dropped from an X-Men film. Over the summer, screenwriter Mark Bomback revealed that he’d originally planned to put Rogue in The Wolverine, but that he’d cut her out when the storyline got too “goofy.”

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens May 23, 2014.

:( Sucks! I liked Rogue... oh well.

Rogue receiving the ax is complete and utter crap. You can't tell me that they couldn't've made that ONE scene work. She was the entire basis of the very first X-Men film and now she can't even hold one scene in Days of Future Past? That's sad.

Exclusive Behind-The-Scenes Image From X-Men: Days Of Future Past!!!

http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=39704

Were you worried that X-Men: Days Of Future Past would be less groovy than its predecessor, X-Men: First Class, after swapping the swingin' '60s for the '70s? Worry no more! This exclusive new behind-the-scenes image from the new issue of Empire (out Tuesday, December 31) proves that the principal cast, and director Bryan Singer, are styling as hard as ever in their Starsky & Hutch-style threads.

This film, as you must know by now, sees a story split between a post-apocalyptic future where mutants are hunted and killed by robots called Sentinels, and a 1970s past where they might just be able to turn the tide. Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) team up to send Wolverine's (Hugh Jackman) consciousness back in time to his younger self to unite their younger selves (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, respectively) and change the course of history. Easy!

The film also stars, oh, everyone who's anyone. Or to be specific, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Peter Dinklage, Evan Peters, Ellen Page, Lucas Till and Daniel Cudmore. X-Men: Days Of Future Past hits UK cinemas on May 22, 2014, with a sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse following in 2016.

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Characters Profiled on 25 Magazine Covers! :scat:

Hey NINJAS! These Magazine Covers are cool! I did not post them all. If you would like to view them, check out the link below!

http://www.slashfilm.com/x-men-days-of-future-past-sentinel-stalks-a-magazine-cover/

There might be a lot of new stuff to see from X-Men: Days of Future Past today. Empire Magazine is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and will be revealing 25 different Days of Future Past covers over the course of the day. We’ll update as new installments come in. Maybe there’ll be some new footage, too.

The first features our best look yet at one of the versions of the Sentinels. Those are the giant robots which, based on early marketing, may serve a general military purpose in parts of the story’s timeline. Eventually, however, if the film holds true to the comic book story from which it takes its name, the Sentinels will be adapted to hunt and kill mutants. They’re relentless; a massacre is coming.

Other covers feature mutants and humans both familiar and new, including the Days of Future Past versions of Bolivar Trask, William Stryker, Toad, Magneto, Quicksilver, and many more. Bryan Singer’s portrait seems to be the midpoint of a giant scroll image, which now moves forward with the “future” version of Wolverine. So previous images of characters like Magneto and Charles Xavier will probably be duped with Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. Will the end feature the final Sentinel design?

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens on May 23.

It stars Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Halley Berry, Nicholas Hoult, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Daniel Cudmore, Fan Bingbing, Boo Boo Stewart, Adan Canto, Evan Peters, Josh Helman and Lucas Till.

Also, I just read an article stating that Rogue WILL be in the movie

"It was one real sequence in the movie," Singer tells Empire (via CBM). "It does not mean that we won't see her in the film. Also, I hope to make the sequence available on the DVD as she was quite wonderful in it. She is an important part of the X-Men family. I'm very pleased she will remain as one of Empire's anniversary covers."
