In an Ideal World all these steelbooks of early-released U.K. Blu-rays (2008 and before) would contain nice shiny new re-mastered discs as some of these discs are going on for 10 years old now.
I do accept that (a) steelbooks are a way to shift unsold stock of old discs (easy to check by comparing the disc art/serial numbers etc. in the original Amaray releases to those inside the later steelbook releases).and (b) it's expensive to re-master and probably not considered economically viable for many of these old catalogue titles.
It's very much the exception rather than the rule that steelbooks are bound to have re-mastered content wherever its available although of course some DO and examples would include the following RE-MASTERED discs inside steelbooks :- SPARTACUS, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY, THE TERMINATOR, AKIRA, FARGO, ROCKY, ROBOCOP TRILOGY, THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY, BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA,THE FRENCH CONNECTION.
It appears that 99% of later steelbook re-releases of early U.K. Blu-ray releases contain OLD DISCS

- I've compiled a list on another thread of all the PRE-2008 U.K. Blu-ray releases that have since been re-released in steelbooks (A FEW GOOD MEN thread - #16 - in the SPOILER box) and correct me if I'm wrong but out of the approx. 40 BDs released before 2008 / re-released in SBs several years later ONLY 1 film / disc has been re-mastered ???!!!
Regarding the PQ etc. of YOUNG GUNS: H-D D review has it down as "one to avoid" with "3/5 stars for the film itself, 3/5 stars for the HD presentation, 3 1/2 stars for the HD Audio Presentation, 1 1/2 for the Supplements and 0/5 for HD Extras."
Other comments include:-
"The "Top Gun" of Westerns . . . too manufactured . . .ridiculously bombastic score in light of the subject matter . . . gratuitous violence . . . geared to the MTV crowd . . . a little bit of believability and a little less posing could have gone a long way towards giving the film a resonance beyond just a bunch of pretty-boy faces on a movie poster."
"Previously re-mastered for a SD Special Edition in 2002 . . . this BD appears to be minted from the same master . . . certainly not the worst HD transfer ever seen but easily the worst from Lionsgate . . . the transfer, soundtrack and extras are all lacklustre and even die-hard fans may not find this enough of an upgrade over the previous SD edition to warrant a purchase"
