"Cross Sale on CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-rays, box sets and games across 230 stores and online comes just weeks after the traditional Boxing Day sale.

Last month the company admitted it is likely to breach its banking covenant - throwing the entertainment retailer's financial future into doubt.

A failure to fulfil lending requirements often signals a company is close to administration, retail analyst Robert Clark told Sky News.

"A lot becomes clear after Christmas - the sale suggests that they didn't have a good one and are trying to reel in as much cash to tie things over," he said.

"I’m not sure how much time they’ve got. I don’t think they’ll be able to sway their bankers. Financial institutions are less likely to show patience in this climate."

But HMV’s chief executive Trevor Moore said in December that closing more stores or placing the business into administration was not "part of our plan" and that the firm was in "constructive discussions" with banks about its performance.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told Sky News the Blue Cross Sale was not unusual for this time of year.

"Normally we'd look to run a multi-buy campaign of some kind at this time of year, but we thought we'd freshen our promotional mix up a bit and try something a bit different that will hopefully stand out from all the other sale offers on the high street right now," he said.

The retailer has taken a huge hit in the face of competition from online retailers like Amazon and Play.

But analysts argue that HMV has failed to reinvent itself in the last 15 years and invest in its stores to keep up with the modern technology revolution.

In December, despite numerous promotions,it announced total sales had fallen 13.5%, while like-for-like sales were down 10.2% in the six months to October 27.

HMV reported a loss before tax of £37.3m - an improvement on the £48.1m loss over the same period the year before. But net debt at the 91 year-old company increased from £163.7m to £176.1m.-bank-deadline."

While I feel for those who have vouchers, I don't approve of what I mentioned above... that's definitely stealing!

There's a huge grey area here and no easy answer but I strongly feel that if HMV has charged the person buying that voucher, whether by cash or card they should be legally obliged to let them redeem it.

Personally I feel that HMV 'stole' all of that money the second they stopped accepting gift cards that people had already paid for! It disgusts me that they are even allowed to do it!!! It's not OUR fault that the management have run the business into the ground.

If we can't use the gift cards then give us our damn money back!!

Apparently angry HMV customers in Limerick have been going into the shop, leaving the vouchers that are no longer redeemable and walking out with goods. The shop had to close today because of it.

If I were in that situation I wouldn't be an a** about it but I would make sure to get that gift card's value, even if that does mean walking in dropping the voucher on the counter and walking out with items

totally agree hmv are stealing from the people so it should only be fair that they take what is owed to them, i have no issue with that at all

LOL-imo we're not 'entitled' to anything except the products that we paid for. If they actually charge our cards, but can't ship the products because of a whole host of factors much bigger than a handful of Steelbook releases, then we are entitled to refunds. If they won't give them to us, because they can't, given the current process of reorganization, then we file claims with our credit cards. I am sure if the employees and management had it their way, they would not want this market shifting change to occur at all. An elimination of a competitor such as this one has implications that go far beyond our discussion here, and a lot of what we're all saying is based on guesses. No one has been 'robbed' just yet....at the offchance that there is anyone on the other end of their web customer service, their e-mail address 'was' [email protected].

All that sounds too complicated....

...i say we start more riots :D

To internet cops & spooks: I am joking, please don't throw my ass in jail. Thanks.

Wow, I have to agree with the people taking items and leaving the vouchers...If I spent $100 of my hard earned money on a gift card for my wife or kid, you better believe I would be getting something out of it...you can't just let people steal money from you.

can't remember where i heard it but i was informed that HMV won't be receiving any new stock now as the adminstrators try to sell off current stock to recoup money that's owed to investors

I must've ordered my last order at the right time yesterday morning. 4 out of my 5 were shipped yesterday, and they only charge on an individual basis so even if my 5th title isn't shipped (which I doubt it will now), I would've only been charged for 4 :)

Thats my main concern, I now have no idea of what is going to turn up and whats not as the sites down  At least it's on my CC so I can claim back anything that doesn't :(
Sorry for the people the have gift cards etc but all that can be done now is wait and see what happens HMV is a big well established name and I can't see it completely going but then who knows

Yeah all my orders are via CC so I'm not too bothered. If they do end up overcharging me I'll just get in contact with my bank and get the money back

Guys, what do you mean that the orders are on your CC's?

I'm consiering my options as well with this situation, fortunately I have only Looper on preorder.

A statement that bold is usually accompanied by some kind of explanation.

HMV is more expensive because they pay the tax they should do.
Amazon is cheaper for everything because they do not (a legal loophole that the government here are looking to stop).
Any store that can match Amazon is price is either not paying tax also (unlikely) or not making profit.
Sad thing is that by the time they do stop this loophole, most of our traditional stores will have gone. We already lost Comet and Jessops recently. Woolworths a couple of years ago.
But if cutomers can get items cheaper, of course they will.

Wow, I'm a little late to things here. Obviously heard about HMV going belly-up, but only just found out about the site being taken down.

So what's the consensus with preorders and things? Would it be wise of me to order the Looper steelbook from Amazon or will HMV be honouring orders made beforehand?

Needless to say, while jobs and losing a British institution are far more important... this absolutely sucks for us collectors. :(

You can still cancel your pre-orders. I did this morning - call up the HMV customer service line: 0845 603 8576

Quote your order number - This should be in your order confirmation email. They'll then be able to cancell ALL pre-orders. I just cancelled everything! :D

I'd actually like to keep mine for now, I'm just wondering if they are actually in a position to still honour them or if I should order them elsewhere?

Worst case scenario is I'll have a spare to trade.
