"Cross Sale on CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-rays, box sets and games across 230 stores and online comes just weeks after the traditional Boxing Day sale.

Last month the company admitted it is likely to breach its banking covenant - throwing the entertainment retailer's financial future into doubt.

A failure to fulfil lending requirements often signals a company is close to administration, retail analyst Robert Clark told Sky News.

"A lot becomes clear after Christmas - the sale suggests that they didn't have a good one and are trying to reel in as much cash to tie things over," he said.

"I’m not sure how much time they’ve got. I don’t think they’ll be able to sway their bankers. Financial institutions are less likely to show patience in this climate."

But HMV’s chief executive Trevor Moore said in December that closing more stores or placing the business into administration was not "part of our plan" and that the firm was in "constructive discussions" with banks about its performance.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told Sky News the Blue Cross Sale was not unusual for this time of year.

"Normally we'd look to run a multi-buy campaign of some kind at this time of year, but we thought we'd freshen our promotional mix up a bit and try something a bit different that will hopefully stand out from all the other sale offers on the high street right now," he said.

The retailer has taken a huge hit in the face of competition from online retailers like Amazon and Play.

But analysts argue that HMV has failed to reinvent itself in the last 15 years and invest in its stores to keep up with the modern technology revolution.

In December, despite numerous promotions,it announced total sales had fallen 13.5%, while like-for-like sales were down 10.2% in the six months to October 27.

HMV reported a loss before tax of £37.3m - an improvement on the £48.1m loss over the same period the year before. But net debt at the 91 year-old company increased from £163.7m to £176.1m.-bank-deadline."

Highly likely that HMV will at some stage appear as a market seller on Play or Amazon to sell the remainder of their stock.

Could be Starling! For now it looks like Amazon has put up its own listing to be fulfilled by them. But as marketplace sellers can also enlist Amazon's logistics for fulfillment it's possible that could change again.Several things in flux right now...

Slightly confused, so could the amazon looper listing be removed or will they definately be offering this item?

From the listing.

This title will be released on January 28, 2013.
Pre-order now.
Dispatched from and sold by Amazon.co.uk. Gift-wrap available.

i understand my concern was in the things are in flux comment as Looper was supposed to be a HMV exclusive, not sure how that is now going to work

well that is a shame...could be worse though. you could be stuck in a situation like me. I have a voucher with £40 on it, except it cant be used now so they've literally robbed me of £40.

id personally walk into a store pick up £40 of goods and dump the voucher on the desk and walk out, why should we loose out ?

I could be wrong and am reading between the lines but it appears the steels are made and Hmv haven't got the capital to pay for the steels. Entertainment one have then probably offered the steels to other parties or party to take full or prt order of the shipment.

Amazon have taken up the offer. Other retailers may have accepted also, if they were asked. Hmv may be selling it again if they find a buyer and can purchase stock again.

ML-since HMV is in the state it's in, the stock could be shifted to other retailers, as the items are already manufactured. No idea if it will stay with Amazon as the primary seller, or move to marketplace seller. Amazon issues refunds if there is a problem, so I'd say you're safe ordering from them. I am not sure anyone but the admins at HMV knows how pending orders will be handled at HMV.

Oh I realize I went grey charged at amazon of they don't get it, but I don't know where to go for the steel it seems like HMV is not the safe bet

Still waiting for another copy of Chernobyl Diaries steelbook...Its been over a month now..I just tried to email them and their site is down!!..Guess I wasted more money on that one :(

even though looper is a bit more expensive on amazon at least we know we can get it now and also the packaging is better plus if it comes damaged they will send another out right away, can't complain really.

I would not be surprised to see Tesco or Sainsbury's provide the Skyfall steelbook, of Amazon don't get it.

The chief of HMV just gave an interview on Sky News and he sounded cautiously optimistic about their future but the guy I believe is from the broken Jessops.

I think Steelbook is a dependable investment for HMV as most of their exclusives go out of stock within few months.

Apparently angry HMV customers in Limerick have been going into the shop, leaving the vouchers that are no longer redeemable and walking out with goods. The shop had to close today because of it.

While I feel for those who have vouchers, I don't approve of what I mentioned above... that's definitely stealing!

Yeah, the policies for gift certificates, gift cards and coupons is always in jeopardy when stores close or chains close....
