"Cross Sale on CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-rays, box sets and games across 230 stores and online comes just weeks after the traditional Boxing Day sale.

Last month the company admitted it is likely to breach its banking covenant - throwing the entertainment retailer's financial future into doubt.

A failure to fulfil lending requirements often signals a company is close to administration, retail analyst Robert Clark told Sky News.

"A lot becomes clear after Christmas - the sale suggests that they didn't have a good one and are trying to reel in as much cash to tie things over," he said.

"I’m not sure how much time they’ve got. I don’t think they’ll be able to sway their bankers. Financial institutions are less likely to show patience in this climate."

But HMV’s chief executive Trevor Moore said in December that closing more stores or placing the business into administration was not "part of our plan" and that the firm was in "constructive discussions" with banks about its performance.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told Sky News the Blue Cross Sale was not unusual for this time of year.

"Normally we'd look to run a multi-buy campaign of some kind at this time of year, but we thought we'd freshen our promotional mix up a bit and try something a bit different that will hopefully stand out from all the other sale offers on the high street right now," he said.

The retailer has taken a huge hit in the face of competition from online retailers like Amazon and Play.

But analysts argue that HMV has failed to reinvent itself in the last 15 years and invest in its stores to keep up with the modern technology revolution.

In December, despite numerous promotions,it announced total sales had fallen 13.5%, while like-for-like sales were down 10.2% in the six months to October 27.

HMV reported a loss before tax of £37.3m - an improvement on the £48.1m loss over the same period the year before. But net debt at the 91 year-old company increased from £163.7m to £176.1m.-bank-deadline."

I used my 20% code last night and the order went through fine. Whether or not the order is posted remains to be seen but I think you're right. Hmv.com is a separate company so can probably continue to trade without any bother from administrators.

Tried my 20% Skyfall code and it doesn't work :(

The J313 £5 off £35 code seems to be still working ATM

From http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-21023602

Record labels and DVD distributors don't want to be wholly dependent for sales on Amazon and Apple's iTunes.

So Deloitte, appointed as administrators to HMV last night, is working on the assumption that these important suppliers will help the creation of a slimmed-down and viable HMV.

This is unlikely to involve these suppliers actually buying HMV out of administration. Much more likely is that they would provide easy credit terms to a buyer - which will very likely be a private equity group (right now, again, there is too much money in private equity chasing too few deals).

Hope they get rescued like Game last year. Good luck to ALL the staff facing loosing thire jobs .The cut in vat rate has really helped the economy how many jobs lost.

I am not political in any way but the high street will soon have tumbleweeds and a bar with a half dead dog outside. UNLESS you live in a MAGOR City like London Edinburgh etc.

This is geting past crap now.

This is a real shame - i feel for the folks affected after what we've been through at Play over the last week.

Fingers crossed that as few people as possible are affected!

just tried using it on hunger games steelbook, still works.

Thought i might be to do with having something from the blue cross sale in your basket, but i tried dthat entered the bluecross code and that worked too (at the same time.) so no idea why yours aint working.

i'd say try again.
make sure the code's right

silly thing to say but you know it DOESN'T work on pre orders right ?

My order using the code had been processed and one item has been dispatched so it looks as if HMV.com is running as normal at the moment. Since it is a separate company, is it possible that the website will continue to run as usual as it hasn't been mentioned in any articles so far.

I hope so, I'm due a refund for a damaged item I posted back last week!

It simply doesn't work on any combination I try, it's also been reported elsewhere that some peoples Skyfall 20% codes don't work whereas some do

well that is a shame...could be worse though. you could be stuck in a situation like me. I have a voucher with £40 on it, except it cant be used now so they've literally robbed me of £40.

I wrote them yesterday asking for the same thing! My Hunger Games steel arrived smashed... hopefully they'll refund... or otherwise I'll be very angry. The T&C still says they'll refunding damaged costs if returned, so I'm hoping they're obliged to.

RE skyfall code:

I colda swore the small print said it was due to expire Jan 1, no?

Anyway the way this is being reported in the media seems totally off to me "HMV behind the times" - HMV have had a decent online presence since, what 2005? (cant remember sooner cause i didn't have my own comp till 2005 lol)

But yeah many ppl like me, have been using their online store on & off since forever - the real issue, as mentioned else where is their PRICES - probably cause amazon/play and their crafty tax avoiding ways will always beat any seller based in the UK.

Of course many ppl including me kinda took those higher prices and held it against HMV somewhat.... but if the UK property prices wernt so absurd, HMV might of been better positioned to compete, eh?

Wonder how much it costs to rent office space in Luxumberg anyway *wonders*

I just received an email, from HMV, telling me about their new releases??!!..I didn't order anything, but can I still order steelbooks and expect to get them in the US?

I wouldn't expect to. It seems like there's some speculation and thought that these exclusive steelbooks will instead be sold / promoted under other retailers stores.

So I would sit tight until we know more - but I would not put an order in with HMV if you want one of these.

I would not put an order in with HMV if you want one of these.

I would second that and add that anybody should read the following article if they have orders with HMV, as there will now be ramifications with respect to replacement or refund of any faulty goods now that the company is under administration. I've already posted the link in the Looper thread but it's worth a look if anyone hasn't seen it:
