LittleBigPlanet, abbreviated to LBP and developed under the title The Next Big Thing, is a puzzle platformer and user-generated content video game for the PlayStation 3, first announced on 7 March 2007, by Phil Harrison at the 2007 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California. It is developed by Media Molecule, a British company founded in part by Rag Doll Kung Fu creator Mark Healey, and published by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

The game revolves around the player's control of small avatars, known as Sackboys or Sackgirls owing to their appearance, in a variety of platforming scenarios. Though the game features a set of pre-built levels for players to explore, of equal importance is the game's customisable nature, from altering the player's character and personal space, to building entirely new objects and levels, and then sharing and playing them online as part of the LittleBigPlanet community.

Originally intended for a release in mid-to-late October, a last-minute delay involving a licensed song in the game's soundtrack delayed the game's release worldwide. It was released in North America and Japan at the end of October 2008, and in Europe at the beginning of November 2008. Seen as an important title for Sony and the PlayStation 3, the game received an overwhelmingly positive reaction from critics, who praised the game's presentation including its graphics, physics and audio, as well as its gameplay and large array of customisable and online features, including its scope and future potential based on user-created content; minor criticism was reserved for some specific elements of the gameplay mechanics and level creation facilities.

You know, if you really think about it, the downloadable possibilities for LittleBigPlanet are downright endless.

And you can fully expect to see PlayStation 3 exclusives find representation in the continually-evolving platformer; we've already seen content from great games like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Resistance 2, and it seems another major franchise will soon make its presence felt in SackBoy's entertaining world. According to GOONL!NE, Insomniac's Twitter page has tossed up the following update:

"lbp levells coming, r&c content done, coming soon hopefully, up next for mm, big pack, bigger than mgs even."

We know Insomniac is currently working on Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time, and we figure it's past time for the two buddies to pop up in LBP. The bottom line is this- in the future, if you have a PS3 exclusive favorite, chances are, you'll be able to recreate it in a cutesy format within LBP. There just aren't many boundaries and although there's always the licensing issue, things like LBP and PlayStation Home will continue to benefit from exclusive content.

If ever there were a reason to purchase the amazing platformer LittleBigPlanet for PlayStation 3, the announcement of brand new content based the worlds of Team Ico would definitely be it.

Confirming a rumor started when LittleBigPlanet Central posted an Ico LittleBigPlanet teaser, Media Molecule has confirmed via a teaser trailer that there will be brand new downloadable content based on Shadow of the Colossus. The teaser trailer only shows so much of the new game content – we get to see a mini-Colossus Sackboy smashed by a colossi-Colossus in a world of stone loosely themed after the game. And what about the rest of the world of Ico? Is there any chance we might also get Ico and Yorda costumes? Will we see anything of the great creature from The Last Guardian in LBP? So far, there's no indication of what more this collaboration between the two great Sony developers will bring, but gamers won't have to wait long – this new LittleBigPlanet Shadow of the Colossus DLC will be released with this week's PSN update on June 11.

Media Molecule will be paying tribute to Team ICO gems ICO and Shadow of the Colossus SackBoy style this Thursday, with the release of a special costume pack for LittleBigPlanet.

So far only a horned ICO costume and Yorda dress have been unveiled, though Media Molecule?s official website is promising a sneak peak at a selection of Colossus-themed content tomorrow.

Obviously, the debut trailer for Team ICO?s hotly anticipated The Last Guardian at E3 last week got the folks at Media Molecule excited enough to treat us with this fab piece of DLC. We can?t say we blame them either ? it looks superb.

We?ll have more details on the Team ICO DLC as it breaks.

To celebrate the UK’s on-and-off heat wave Media Molecule has announced a new FREE Sackboy costume that will be available on the EU PSN store this Thursday, 18th June and the following week in North America, just after Midsummer’s Day. It’s a time limited costume, and will only be available to download for a week. Here’s a pic of the new summer solstice costume:

UPDATE: The costume has been delayed one week in Europe, according to a tweet from Media Molecule.

"Solstice costume delayed in Europe until next week - sorry folks," reads the message, followed by an empathetic smile.

One week only to get free druid costume for LBP

LittleBigPlanet makers Media Molecule have noticed the change in the weather, and it reminded them of the beliefs of the ancient inhabitants of their native U.K., the druids.

The druids believed the sun to be hottest at midday during the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. This was the biggest holiday of the year for them and they met in vast stone circles to perform religious rituals.

Today, science has confirmed the summer solstice to the exact day. In celebration of the druids and their awesome astronomical knowledge, LittleBigPlanet will have a free druid costume for download, but it will only be available for one week.

The beardy druid costume is available on June 18 in the U.K. and June 25 in the U.S. Don?t forget, because unlike solstices, beardy druid Sackboy is not coming back.

Media Molecule will be unleashing two specialised ?Sacktue of Liberty? costumes for LittleBigPlanet early next month in celebration of Independence Day in the U.S. on July 4.

Punters will be able to download the funky new SackBoy skins on July 2, free of charge. While you?re there, it?s also worth remembering that the Druid outfit is still up for grabs, albeit for a limited time only, so be sure not to miss out.

Lastly, Media Molecule?s website has a quick history of the Statue of Liberty posted on its website, so be sure to check it out if you fancy brushing up on your history.

Ghostbusters DLC coming to LittleBigPlanet?

The chaps over at Media Molecule have indicated that a batch of Ghostbusters-themed downloadable content is on the cards for popular SackBoy romp LittleBigPlanet.

Speculation comes via a post on the U.S. PlayStation Blog advertising the newly released ?Sacktue of Liberty? theme packs. Towards the end of the article, the question "Future LittleBigPlanet DLC?" is presented, with a black box containing the words ?Who ya gonna call?? placed to the right of the text.

Ring any bells? It should do. While not an outright confirmation, we?d wager there?s a high possibility of seeing Slimer and co heading to LittleBigPlanet in some form or another in the not too distant future. Plus, considering the franchise celebrated its 25th anniversary last month, now seems as good of a time as any to make the jump.

In the meantime, how about telling us what costumes you?d like to see from this legendary franchise in the comments section below? We?ll have more on this story as it develops.

A chance to be King of LBP

Media Molecule is having a decoration contest. The winner gets an exclusive crown that no other player will ever, ever, get.

To enter, decorate your pod and dress your sackboy to match. Take a picture, and include an explanation if desired. Judging will be based on originality of theme and creativity of decorations.

You have until July 28 to get your submission in to Media Molecule’s five judges.

The full details and instructions are found on the LittleBigWorkshop forums.

he House of Ideas had an idea to take a few of its bullpen best and turn them into Sackboys. At today's "The Next Generation of Marvel Video Games" panel, three new heroic LittleBigPlanet costumes were revealed.

Marvel showed off three concept renders of Sackboys that may be coming to the PlayStation 3 exclusive, but did not offer dates for the costumes, nor confirm that this would be the extent of the Marvel characters that would be licensed for LittleBigPlanet use.

Considering Marvel has Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 and Marvel Super Hero Squad coming this year, don't be surprised if you see Captain America, Iron Man and Wolverine on your PS3 soon.

LBP sparks up with inFamous costumes

In a continued effort to turn everything from Sony?s portfolio into LittleBigPlanet content, Media Molecule announced today it will soon release a costume based on Cole MacGrath, the star of the electrifying PlayStation 3 game inFamous.

On August 6 you?ll be able to dress your sackboy or sackgirl up as either good or evil Cole. Media Molecule did not specify a price for either costumes, but seeing as the only difference between good and evil is facial features and the color of the handheld electrical spark; we assume both costumes will sell for the price of one.
