Basic battles will take place within ongoing, faction-based campaigns to encourage the player to actively play, with at least three factions being considered for inclusion; including American, European and Middle Eastern factions.

The game's E3 unveiling trailer featured large landscapes, tactics such as air strikes and parachuting, and a variety of vehicles, from tanks and APCs to airplanes. The game will boast numerous classes for players to specialize in; including medics, commandos and field demolition specialists. It has not been announced if the game will be a third person shooter, like Zipper's previous SOCOM games, or a first person shooter.

MAG: Massive Action Game is the tentative name for an upcoming MMO shooter exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in development by Zipper Interactive. The game was announced at Sony's E3 2008 press conference, and will be released sometime in 2009. Various subtitles are being considered for the game, including MAG: Shadow War, MAG: Zero, MAG: Global Assault and MAG: Final Hour.

A PS3 exclusive, the game will utilize a new server architecture to support online battles with up to 256 players, with users divided into 8-player squads. Each squad will be led by a player who has advanced through the game's ranking system. Character statistics and development will also increase with frequent gameplay. The players most advanced in rank will be able to either direct the battle or participate directly in combat.

Beta Info

Zipper Interactive's first next-generation title, MAG offers an extensive battle experience with a total of 256 players online. They recently showed off never before seen gameplay footage during Sony's E3 Press Conference roughly two weeks ago. Ever since this footage was shown, PS3 owners around the world have anxiously wanted to get their hands on this exclusive title. Read More to find out when you will be able to do so.

I am proud to announce that I have received word from Zipper Interactive that the MAG Public Beta will begin this summer. It may actually start next month in fact, but they do not want to give out specific months as this may shift. When asked how they will distribute their online beta, they replied saying that they are not quite sure how they will distribute the codes just yet. I will try to bring you guys the latest news on how they will go about distributing the codes as soon as I receive word.

MAG is an ambitious game by any gamer’s rubric. The smart and terrifyingly ballsy guys over at Zipper Interactive have decided to make a 256 player multiplayer-only experiences for console. In real life.

A new developer diary has one promise every fan of games and tech snobs will enjoy. No matter what is going on in-game, MAG is optimized to keep the frame rate at 30fps. Now that’s not too great — 60fps is what real life uses — but when you have 256 players all converging on the final capture point, with helicopters dropping in reinforcements and grenades going off left and right and the PS3 is still chugging out a lag-less 30fps you gotta show some respect.

MAG is a PS3 exclusive scheduled to come out some time this year.

We’re back with another behind-the-scenes for MAG! This week, in the third “MAG Mondays” dev diary installment, Zipper Interactive gives us an in-depth look at each of the three PMCs in the game: Raven, S.V.E.R., and Valor.

Do you associate with the high-tech, polished Raven, or are you drawn in by the traditional military style of Valor? Or perhaps you’re into the edgy, aggressive S.V.E.R.? I’ve chosen my allegiance; which private army will you join?

It's not like the MW community is very intelligent with their "funnies"

I will get MAG if they give me a demo to play

It also looks as though the BETA only is run at certain times ala Fat Princess BETA. Wonder how early the build really is.

With the grand scope of the battles featured in Zipper Interactive's MAG, you'd think it'd require a hefty, server-straining beta test. For now, though, it seems Sony's keeping it small -- a few people have seen their PSN friends participating in a MAG beta (as evidenced by the image above). All of these friends have something in common -- they're all on Sony's payroll.

Sony confirmed to CVG that an internal MAG beta is being conducted. Sure, this news has no bearing on you (unless Kaz Hirai signs your paychecks) -- still, it looks like we're that much closer to getting to play the game ourselves.

now if only i can find a way on that payroll, then i can get this beta!

Dear Sony

I love you. Please add me to your payroll, and I will buy you chocolates.

Love

PS: if you could also put me in the MAG beta, id be yours forever.
