I've opted to pass on the region free player for now since I'm not getting that many Region B Locked titles. Instead I've decided to use the software, AnyDVD HD to strip the region coding out in real time on my computer. I have a HD video card and monitor so I'm set there. Then I can just play my Region A or Region Free titles on my PS3 or Samsung Blu-ray player. :D

maybe, but I still would be leery to connect online with it.

Built-in Wi-Fi
For access to streaming content and firmware updates

If it works as region free with remote hack 9113. The last thing you want to do is do any firmware updates.

Wreck, not sure if this is relevant, but I did all the necessary firmware updates on my Insignia and the "hack" still works. I don't really think it's a hack though. Probably more of a factory setting thing that someone let the code slip to the public. I can switch mine back and forth with no problem. It's actually a good way to check any disk to see what regions they play in too. When I had it set to Region B, it told me specifically for my Region A Beetlejuice disc "this is a Region B player and will not play other regions" (something to that nature). Then I just change it back, and presto!
I got lucky picking this one up at :bestbuy: a couple years back (for free, nonetheless)

Are there any multi-region players out there that can detect and choose the correct region automatically? That is, a player where I don't have to change the region via a remote hack on a factory settings page everytime I want to watch a blu-ray from a different region.

I'm aware that an Oppo mod allows me to just select a region by hitting just one button and then powering on.

ok so i just picked up the insignia wbrdvd2 from Craigslist brand new for $45... and uploaded the last known software that allows the region free capability and did the remote hack and it works like a charm!!!

This player is more then a bargain ... its a super bargain!!! Wanna know why? On top of the 6 region free dvd zones and 3 region free bluray zones IT PLAYS MKV FILES!!!!! :oohyeah:
:oohyeah:
:oohyeah:

Very impressed with this player for the money. Played my region locked Black Hawk Down and Expendables blurays and they worked perfectly.

Cant recommend this more... for the cost of one mid-priced steelbook you get a region free player for peace of mind... this is a must IMO for global steelbook collector's and the mkv file capability just puts it over the top for myself. :scat:

Another great player, and a brand name player too, is the Toshiba BDX1200. It ships with a CD to update the firmware to the latest and multiregion firmware and includes instructions on how to set the player to Region 0 (disabled) for DVD and Region A/B/C for Blu-ray.

Moreover, it has:
- MKV support (EXCELLENT)
- USB port including NTFS support (EXCELLENT)
- HDMI-CEC so turning on the player automatically turns on the TV, etc. (EXCELLENT)
and can be found with a sub-$100 price tag. (EXCELLENT)

The BDX1200 is available as UK and AU/NZ (BDX1200KY) models (at least). Availability:
- UK model (~65 GBP) is available at http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004Y3UXU6/?tag=hidefnin-21 .
- AU model (~80 AUD) is available at Victoria's CostCo.

Note: The Toshiba QPB302B hardware is identical to the Soniq QPB302B, with the same remote and also same code (Power On, Setup, Eject, 8250) to bring up the region setting service menu.

I've had the Oppo BDP-83 with hardware mod for a couple years now. Fine with DVDs. No reason to believe it won't work with my Blu's. I also heard of a software mod for this player after getting the hardware mod. Oh well...

Nice having built-in PAL-NTSC conversion too.

is that the same one I have? And yeah man, such a bargain for the price. I was happy spending $80 on my first, but just as happy spending $39 for my 2nd ;p

yup same one Wreck. Its fantastic for the price. I think mine might be slightly different though as it is the model that has wifi... not sure if yours does as well?

Either way a rave review for the Insignia player from me :)

So kewl, I finally got my HTPC working. Now can watch any region Blu-ray or DVD courtesy of AnyDVD HD. I could not for the life of me figure out what was wrong with it. I couldn't get signal over to my HDTV. EEK! Stupid HDMI cable was bad and my AnyDVD HD software needed upgrading. Replaced cable and upgraded software... No longer limited by Region B locked titles any more. :oohyeah:
