where were you hiding EEK!

All seriousness tho it was all that was talked about on any hobbit thread on almost any site. Also they did the same with LOTR on dvd and blu-ray?

Just some retailer "screwed up" and I believe WB even had it up on their site...

Now we just play the waiting game with hopefully some different art. And I would not mind a 2d release.

Im expecting some other bonus stuff as well not in the original release.

And if you really dont care why keep posting ?

ps. They will prob release the 2nd movie in a extended version before the final film is released . Just want to give you a years notice So you have no excuse for not knowing . :p

Point taken, I obviously wasn't concentrating enough in class, but it still seems unnecessary to release 2 steelbooks for this film.

While I wasn't expecting the extended edition to get a steelbook, I would never have bought the standard edition even If it was confirmed to be the only one getting a steel release.
Thought it was common knowledge the extended version comes out right before the next movie hits the cinemas the same way LOTR did.

I knew they were releasing an extended edition but like many other people above I never thought they'd release it in a steelbook. I will of course be purchasing it. Just hope it's an amazon exclusive.

The main concern I have about this release is whether it will be a jumbo or not. With both 2D and 3D included, that's anywhere between 2 and 4 discs just for the feature, and then there's another disc, potentially 2, for special features. So with somewhere between 3 and 6 discs in this set, it seems to me that it could go either way.

Good point, I never considered that.
I remember the amaray release of the 3D standard version looked pretty chunky.
Hope bilbo doesn't go jumbo on us!

I've got the French 3D steelbook, so will probably end up buying the 2D extended version, and popping it in there with the 2D theatrical version as the steel houses 4 discs :).

I knew they'd release an extended edition, but I didn't think they'd do another steelbook for it. That's the annoying part.

same
but I guess I should sell my current, 2d steel now whilst I've a chance of getting a decent amount of money back on it

why would the 2D be spread across 2 discs? The 3D sure, but I reckon they can fit the 2D on a single disc (they did with Titanic and thats the only other 3hr+ movie I'm aware of)

I think we're looking at a 4 disc set

There's no reason that they couldn't fit the 2D feature on one disc, but I'm basing my reasoning on precedent, which at this point is all we have to go on.

The Lord of the Rings extended cuts were split into two discs, even on their Blu-Ray release, and I think it has come to be a part of the presentation of these extended edition sets. Even if we're looking at 2 discs for 3D, 1 for 2D (which I've admitted is entirely plausible), I have serious doubts that the bonus material will all fit onto 1 disc if there's a similar amount to the LoTR versions.

It's not a given that we'll get a jumbo by any means, but I really think it's a possibility.

true but The theatrical Hobbit wasnt as long as TLOTR movies, so I cant see them needing to spread it....though like you say, based on how they split prior movies there sadly is a chance.

I hope not. TBH, I'd rather forgo any extras and just have the 3D/2D movie, which considering the inevitable trilogy boxset, could be likely as any extras they didtn include in the theatrical release, will likely be held back for said boxset

I'm hoping for a slim steel too, and that my worries are all baseless.

Some musings on running time: The Fellowship of The Ring (EE) has a running time of 228 min, compared to An Unexpected Journey's 169 min. However, if we add on the 20-25 min of extra footage Peter Jackson said will be incorporated, and the 20 min fan club credits, it totals up to 209-214 min. So the film we'll end up getting won't be that much shorter than its older brothers.

Of course, this assumes that Jackson's figure is still correct, and that the fan club credits are still something they're going to do. both assumptions could be wrong.

Another thought on reducing discs could be to split the film in half as discussed, but then combine the 2D and 3D films within these two discs, so you'd have 'part one (2D & 3D)' and 'part two (2D & 3D)'. It would probably be a close call, but they might be able to squeeze the cuts onto two discs this way without compressing.

Personally, I wouldn't want to lose the special features. These are the real treasure of the Extended Editions for me, even more than the new cuts of the movies, and while I can't speak for others' opinions, I'd guess that most consider them part and parcel with these releases. That said, we are dealing with a different distributor than before, so nothing should be taken for granted.

doing a 2D/3D version on the same disc like with the 3D release of Avatar - YES!!

It actually bugs me when many companies still insist on separate 2D and 3D discs all the time - though where there is no extras disc, a 2D version with the few extras is needed as well I suppose. But having sets with an extras disc, 2D and 3D discs, so 3 total, is a waste IMO
