I know we all love to bash Zavvi (and when it comes to price, usually we can), but I wonder how much say they have over which art is used.
We knew it had to be something that had already been used (fan mock-ups are great, but often the images used haven't been signed off by the licence holders) so it could be Paramount's call. Afterall, these are the official signed off images done by their designers and have approval by all the studio heads and cast members etc.
When you look at the Doctor Who DVDs, there's some great custom covers out there but we know that the BBC don't hold the rights to a lot of the images that fans use. Same with Shout/Scream Factory releases. They wanted to do new designs for Psycho II and III but Universal said no. They wanted the theatrical poster art only (even though they've used some shoddy Photoshop jobs themselves in the past) so Shout had little choice even if I'm sure they'd have come up with something amazing.
Covers on steelbooks are always going to divide consumers. I hate Robocop, it has the wrong font and is dull, many like it. Planet of the Apes is trying something new and a lot of people aren't happy, same with Die Hard and so on. I say, if in doubt, do with the theatrical poster art. That way, even if people don't like it, well, it was used to advertise the movie and not some new idea that could be even worse.
