Marvel Entertainment reported its First Quarter earnings today and gave a few updates on its upcoming movies during the company's quarterly conference call.

Iron Man 2 is, of course, already filming for a May 7, 2010 release, but Marvel said this morning that the Kenneth Branagh-directed Thor is scheduled to start filming in the First Quarter of 2010. No formal offers have been made to actors, though they said that casting announcements are likely the next few months. Thor is targeted for a May 20, 2011 release.

Marvel added that The First Avenger: Captain America, to be directed by Joe Johnston, is scheduled to start filming in the summer of 2010 for a July 22, 2011 release.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Marvel's President of Production Kevin Feige talked about The Avengers as well:

"Zak Penn is already on board The Avengers [as writer] and he's spending a lot of his time looking into what we're doing with Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, seeing how we're tying it all together. And he's beginning to outline the script now – he'll be doing that over the summer."

The Avengers is coming to theaters on May 4, 2012.

Well its been out for a few days and it's confirmed that Marvel did not want to pay Edward Norton and they've pushed him aside for the Avengers......

I heard that was a lie. He met with the director and thought things went well, but they called him later and said they're going in a different direction.

I heard that was a lie. He met with the director and thought things went well, but they called him later and said they're going in a different direction.

Look at Edwards statement on the subject.....Marvel asked him to participate he met with Whedon and they were in negotiations for him to join....then Marvel gave him the boot.

"As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige told HitFix.com that the studio was moving forward on "The Avengers" without Norton, noting that their decision was, "not based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members."

Norton's agent quickly issued his own statement, calling Feige's comments, "unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory."

"This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light," the agent also said in his statement to HitFix.com.

As for Norton, he noted that the fan reaction to the news upset him.

Rumor: Joaquin Phoenix to play Hulk in The Avengers?

Hot on the news that Edward Norton has had his Avengers membership card revoked, Devin Faraci from CHUD claims reliable sources have told him that Marvel has put out an offer to Joaquin Phoenix for the role of Bruce Banner, the Incredible Hulk’s puny human alter ego.

Phoenix, who has been nominated twice for Oscars (Gladiator, Walk the Line), had quit acting recently to concentrate on a rap career that may or may not have been a practical joke undertaken for the purposes of a documentary filmed by Casey Affleck. Spending the last few years dressed like an angry homeless man and in a constant state of drugged out haze, Phoenix may be looking for a career comeback and movies won’t get much bigger than The Avengers. Marvel’s upcoming superhero team-up will combine the stars from its Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and Thor franchises; Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon is all but confirmed to direct.

Word on the web is that Marvel is looking to formally announce Whedon as the film’s director at this month’s Comic-Con — letting the man introduce the cast of the film. The studio, then, is in a hurry to get a star lined up to replace Norton as the Incredible Hulk’s alter ego Bruce Banner. If Phoenix passes on a role, another offer to another star may go out immediately.

The Buzz: While Joaquin Phoenix may not be my first choice, I have little hopes that Marvel will be considering Steve Buscemi anytime soon. In that case, Phoenix may make a fine addition to the long line of actors who you wouldn’t like when they’re angry.

Over his career, Phoenix has played a variety of character types — showing he has the range to pull off a role normally not associated with his wheel basket. His recognizable name and award-winning pedigree could also help balance the film’s cast out nicely — joining Robert Downey Jr. as the senior statesman in a cast that would have otherwise been leaning a bit too much toward the up-and-coming talent section of Hollywood.

Faraci warns readers to treat this as a rumor — so members of the Joaquin Phoenix Fan Club shouldn’t get too excited just yet. The reason it seems Norton was axed from the project to begin with seems to stem from the troubles associated with his historically hard-to-work-with attitude. Phoenix hasn’t exactly been Mr. Congeniality of late either. Even if an offer was put out to Phoenix, Marvel might wise up and decide to go with somebody a little less difficult.

Until the moment Whedon calls out Phoenix’s name, though, I’ll still be rooting for Buscemi to walk away with the role he was born to play.

Mark Ruffalo To Be The Hulk?

Imagine the Hollywood actor whom you'd least expect to play The Incredible Hulk in The Avengers, and maybe, just maybe, you'd come up with the name of Mark Ruffalo. He's always been an actor's actor and is getting critical raves in Focus Features' The Kids Are All Right which opened last weekend. But I've learned that he's now in late-stage discussions between Marvel and his brand-new agency United Talent to play this key member of The Avengers ensemble. Like Edward Norton, whom he'd be replacing, Ruffalo would bring real chops to the role. But, unlike Edward Norton, he wouldn't an on-set asshole.

Meanwhile, let me get out of the way that Thor (May 6, 2011) and Captain America (July 22, 2011) will be in 3D. They were filmed in 2D but the plan has been for the visual effects to be rendered in 3D for Captain America while Thor will undergo more of a traditional conversion.

Damn I actually had some sort of expectations for The Avengers....now I know how much a stinker is setting up to be.

I been seeng alot of comments like this trust me from my post above of course i want norton back but since we cant have him doesn't mean it should ruin it for us.i mean we stillg gonna have ironman, captain america, thor amd other's where only really loosing one guy.

they should have brought Bana back. that would have been pretty cool I think. I loved that Hulk movie, which I know alot of folks dispise. Ruffalo is a much better choice than Phoenix tho, IMO.

Still not interested in this flick. There are too many superhero movies coming out. It's hard to keep up. Saw the trailer for the Green Lantern tho and that looks mildly entertaining and amusing.

I'm not even gonna bother wasting my money on this crapfest of a movie.

Is it me, or does anyone else think that golden eye patch looks damn ridiculous?! Loki needs his freakin helmet!! and so does Thor damn it!!

BTW - I agree with you Roach, I am a little concerned with Hulk. I like Norton way too much to accept just any baffoon to take his place.
