It's the easy way out. How come the other retailers can have different art on their steelbook slips?

by investing a lot of time and money and often having connections to the filmmakers itself. it's no secret that other (premium) retailers sometimes needs month/years to get artworks approved, charging a lot extra $ for it and are located in smaller/harder to sell market regions where the studios have an higher interest to advertise there products stronger with 'special' gimmicks, it's not an coincidence most 'premium' retailers are locate somewhere in asia.

You seriously telling me that Korea and China are 'small markets'? Come on.:rofl:

Zavvi are supposed to be the 'Home of Steelbooks'. Surely they have connections with studios by now? I don't mind waiting a few months to get something approved and done right. But with Zavvi it always feels like it's the cheapest, easiest/laziest, fastest way to cash in IMO.

I don't want to go in to economical details but yes. the asian market on blurays is overall harder to sell and tougher, the actual market potential is huge though and if you want to penetrate that market than you have a stronger interest to advertise your product. while over here steelbooks are more the common way to get rid of a pile of disc stock and not to advertise the product itself on a premium price level.

Why has everyone got their knife in Zavvi ?

They're telling you the truth, you don't like it -- does that make them at fault somehow?

If they actually do something wrong - hammer them by all means.
I was thinking the same thing. If anything the added slipcase is just a good bonus - it protects the steelbook and adds an extra sense of quality. I really don't give a **** even if it has the same artwork than the steel itself, as long as the artwork in general is good. Some people are just bitching and moaning at everything Zavvi does. For me they have always been a great, great store to buy steelbooks and Blu-rays from. (The few times I've received a damaged steelbook, I've ALWAYS received a replacement from them when I've just asked.) If you don't like it, don't buy it. It's that simple.

Actually I admit Zavvi have from time to time been awkward in replacing damaged steels; but I've always got the replacement. And frankly, we would be much worse off as steelbook collectors, or even blu-ray collectors in general without them.

Trouble is many of the people who hammer them remorselessly compare them to specialist companies; but Zavvi is a wide-ranging business and sells much more than steelbooks.

By the same token, their prices are more often than not a drop in the ocean compared to the specialists. Take Quadrophenia, decent art, alternative art on the slip £15-99 delivered. - if this were even FA, with just the addition of a lenticular, a numbering card/sticker, 6 cards and a booklet you're looking at near double the price, HDz, BluFans or Manta, triple the price; all plus delivery and the overall gain is negligible in real terms.

But I digress. Top Gun has been in demand as a steelbook for some time. To get more than a simple reissue that has decent art and a slipcase is a real bonus.
A little way down the line this wil be selling on fleabay for fifty quid,, and people will be crying because they didn't buy a copy.

If Zavvi would say NO to some of the artwork that they are, as they say, NOT responsible for, we would have a different slip cover right now.
But they most likely say "Yeah, of course, we will sell it as is. People are stupid, they would buy anything."

Regarding Top Gun ... Only scalpers will sell it for 50 quid. No person in their right mind would pay 50 quid for this thing.

Considering there has been several Top Gun releases I think the opportunity to release the 3D edition in steelbook was missed.

And as for this wave of Zavvi slip cases, if I did buy a SB that had one it would be going straight in the bin, complete cack same design and the ugly logos slapped all over the box. Only good it serves is that extra bit of protection during shipping.

There is very little in the way of decent original poster art for this steelbook cover and out of what there is this is the best image by a country mile . . . and if replicating it on the slipcase keeps the cost of the item down to an acceptable level (to me) then I'm all for it and have zero objections.
Thinking if special new artwork had been created especially for this release we wouldn't have a typical "cheap 'n' cheerful" Zavvi product but something from a different ballpark AND PRICED ACCORDINGLY to reflect this added expense and certainly not aimed at the vast majority of U.K. Blu-ray consumers
Best TOP GUN poster (others just embarrassing)

Hopefully they do something with those sparks a la THE REVENANT.

Again, you are imaging a scenario in which Zavvi are a specialist. They are not. Despite the fact that they sell a lot of steelbooks, they also sell T-shirts, trainers, electrical goods etc.

Were they a specialist in the vein of FA, Kimchi, Nova, HDz, Blufans they would have the time and resources available to enter protracted negotations with the studios over artwork and appropriate extras; but then your £15-99 steelbook would be a £30 steelbook, and so it goes . . . .

Regarding future values, comparision is odious, but no-one in their right mind would pay £250 for FAC AASB (it's not particularly well finished, the artwork is nothing special, extras non-existent, and the film is pretty bad) but they do! :naughty:

I GUESS, you didn't understand my point at all. If zavvi said NO, our loyal customers don't like matching slip cover / steelbook artwork, then the manufacturer would most likely consider changing the slip cover.
Selling policy of any good company is to sell a product people would actually love to buy - that's how businesses stay in business. When they start spewing all sorts of crap to their shelves people start asking themselves why the hell are they even buying this crap. I know there are exceptions to this rule - some people would buy anything, even if it's a bag of dog s**t, but most wouldn't.

If Zavvi started charging £30 per steelbook, they would lose 90% of their customers who only buy steelbooks with them. I would be one of the first ones.

Regarding future values, you can't compare Zavvi and FAC. It's like comparing apples and oranges - they are both round but the obvious differences are there.
And whoever buys a steelbook for £250 (no matter the manufacturer) is, in my mind, considered a complete whack job.
And I would really like to know who paid £250 for a steelbook. You got any names?

Sorry for going slightly off topic :D

Think a mass retailer like Zavvi doesn't care to make connections with the Studios. All they want to try to get the selling rights (exclusivity). Fair on them. Repeatedly slating them in every thread doesn't help as we all know it is falling into deaf ears. If Zavvi starts doing premium Steels and price it at 24.99 or 29.99 and charges accurate postage to overseas destinations, our fanboys will still complain that it is too high but happily pay $12 to Asian retailers for 1 Steelbook. So it is better that Zavvi stays away from doing expensive editions.

Remember Crimson Tide 1 Disc Korea Steelbook, Kimchi released a slip box edition for $45 including postage (£34). Yes the slip artwork was different but remember it is still £18 above what Zavvi charges.

I don't see why the artwork on the slipcase should be any different to that on the steelbook itself . . . would be a nice touch but hardly a deal-breaker for most customers . . . and certainly no different to Amaray slipcovers/slipcases, the majority of which have the same artwork on both.

I wonder how these will be packaged for shipping, as having a cardboard slip case could mean a very tight fit in the regular steelbook shipping boxes.
