Hi All,

It looks like our former thread has become unavailable, so I am posting a new one. Feel free to post pics and share your worst experiences with damaged Steelbooks as received from retailers. I've stickied this one for now.

Thanks,
DB

Hi guys,

A couple of months ago I posted about my experience with receiving a super damaged Skyrim Steelbook from a seller on the Blu-ray forums. I have filed a claim against them on Paypal and after about a month of waiting, Paypal has issued me this e-mail request:

Dear Edmund,

In order to continue with the investigation of your claim, we request
documentation to support your claim that the item is damaged or
significantly not as described. Please obtain a document from an unbiased
third-party, such as a dealer, repair shop, appraiser, or another
individual or organisation that is qualified in the area of the item in
question (other than yourself), which details the extent of the damage or
clearly explains how the item received significantly differs from the item
advertised. Please do not proceed with any repairs or alterations to the
item, as doing so will limit our ability to resolve your claim, and may
result in its cancellation. If possible, the document should include a
serial number and description of the item and the amount required to
complete the repairs necessary to correct the damage. This document must be on letterhead paper that includes the name, address, and phone number of the individual, business, or organisation so that we may contact them if necessary.

You can upload documents to us by following these steps:

[...]

Please ensure we receive your fax documentation within the next ten days.
Your claim will be cancelled if we do not receive your fax documentation
within this time. We cannot grant extensions to this. Please note that
PayPal is unable to reimburse you for any costs or fees incurred in
obtaining the requested documents. Documents you provide may be supplied to the seller in your dispute.

We apologise for any inconvenience this request may cause. As an
internet-based business, we do not have the opportunity to review the
relevant items and evidence in question. Therefore, we must rely on the
documents described in our request to continue with the investigation of
your claim.

Thank you for your patience and co-operation regarding this matter.

Sincerely,

Philipp

Any idea on what kind of proof I should be submitting? Has anyone ever had to do this for a claim? I don't even know what kind of third-party is qualified to back me up in this case. :(

No i have never seen such an request of paypay before. Unfortunately i have no idea what kind of third-party could handle this. You could try an electronic store near you or ask scanavo if they could write you a confirmation that a dented Steelbook can not be repaired and it definitely is a total loss.
Here you find the contact for Steelbook: http://www.steelbook.com/sw/frontend/show.asp?parent=198126&menu_parent=196961&layout=0
Maybe they do you the favor if you write them what happened and if you tell them that you are a passionate Steelbook collector.
I wish you good luck!

Thanks, I just e-mailed Scanavo. I hope they will answer at least. :)
I really have no idea who to contact locally, maybe some metal shop? Hah. :p

Exactly the same as the blade that i showed you, ive complained to inetvideo but havent had a response yet! now we know why they were so cheap lol

I started opening about 20+ movies last night from recent purchases and recently arrived orders. Firstly I found that my copy of The Millenium trilogy had a squashed corner, a small depression/scuff mark on the front cover as well as looking like something pierced it. I took some photos, sent them off to Sanity (AU) customer service and the guy apologised profusely and hand-picked a replacement, wrapped it with a generous amount of bubble wrap and sending as a replacement. He told me to just pop the damaged item into the mailer I receive, write "return to sender" on it and pop it in a mailbox to avoid having to pay anything to return it. Great outcome! (providing the replacement is in mint condition).

Shortly after that, I opened Pan's Labyrinth steelbook purchased from Amazon.ca and it had a really deep dent and a crease that you can't see in the photo below. I sent a replacement request through to Amazon, included the photo and got a very quick reply from a customer service representative to tell me that she has organised a replacement to be sent out via priority mail and not to worry about sending the damaged item back. The amount has been charged to my credit card to save hold ups in customs, and a refund for that amount has been generated which will be seen in 2-3 days.

Thought I'd put up a couple of positive outcomes to help balance out the negativity that these issues can sometimes create :D

I am not sure what I am looking at here. Is it the paper that is stuck on the Steelbook? I think you should be able to remove that with some water combined with Goo Gone or something if it is.

That's what I thought too was just paper stuck to the back from glue. I don't recommend Goo Gone anymore though. According to Andy it can cause damage to the SteelBook. This is what he recommends.
Never, ever, EVER use goo gone on a matte steelbook. EEK!

I did that to my Hancock steelie years ago and I ended up with a SHINY spot where my sticker glue used to be.

I recommend butter. Straight from nature's teet to my steelbook collection. :naughty: EEK! :scat:

So far it has proved useful, especially on slip covers on regular Amaray cases. I would never thought of butter but yeah, it works wonders for removing stickers/labels or leftover glue.

Last weekend I was at Best Buy with a friend and he came up to me and said "what's this?" It was the Lion King Pre-Order metal box which I was surprised they still had. I figured it was good for $8 and bought it even though I had one coming in the mail. When I got home and opened it there was a dent under the paper. Not the end of the world, but I put my Blu Rays in it and just kept the other one sealed for now. I guess I have a spare in case it gets damaged further.

ronsonol lighter fluid is the best stuff you should use for everything and anything sticker or glue.

1. no smell or residue
2. will never damage any steelbook or slipcover

Since Im getting another Drive on the way from a forum member, should I just open this one to keep since it is already dented? I dont REALLY mind, but it aint gonna hold value even if it's sealed right?

Is this true? :S
I should be worried then as I have used it a few times.
What does it do exactly (besides making it stink :p)?

By the way, I just got a response from Scanavo and they wrote me a formal letter confirming the damage on my Skyrim Steelbook. Thanks again to Søren for the nice letter, I wonder if he reads this forum. :)
