Gran Turismo 5 (also known as GT5) the fifth edition of the highly acclaimed Gran Turismo racing video game series, developed by Polyphony Digital and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Expanding on the Prologue version, which was first released in Japan on December 13, 2007 and intended to give an impression of the final game, it will be the first of the main numbered series to feature on the PlayStation 3.

As found in the Prologue, and for the first time in the numbered Gran Turismo series, the game is set to feature cars from Ferrari, including the Ferrari F2007 Formula One World Championship car. In addition to Prologue features, it will also include the Test Track from the BBC motoring show Top Gear, and will greatly expand on the number of cars available to over 9000. There will also be a 16 player online mode as in GT5 Prologue.

In an April 2008 interview, Kazunori Yamauchi revealed that 150 people had worked on Gran Turismo 5 for four years, with all of Polyphony Digital's 120 employees working on GT5, and the game costing 50 times more to develop than 1997's Gran Turismo. He also confessed that GT5 might not be released until after 2009. In a July 2008 interview with IGN, Yamauchi mentioned that at the moment, Polyphony Digital is focused on updates for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and that Gran Turismo 5 may not be released until 2010.

On November 30, 2008. Sony’s chief executive in Southern Europe, James Armstrong, revealed in a statement to a Spanish newspaper that GT5 is expected to be released around Christmas 2009. This would probably mean a late Summer release for Japan and an Autumn/Winter release for Europe and North America. This release date has yet to be confirmed as an official time of release by Polyphony Digital.

No Porsche in GT5

In a recent Consumer Electronics Show interview, Kazunori Yamauchi has confirmed that Porsche will still not be included in GT5, due to "licensing issues." He also confirmed that "there'll be 950 cars, 20 locations and 70 layouts."

In addition to this, he mentioned that there will be a wide variety of cars available, including hybrids and electronic vehicles. You will now also be able to set up car clubs or racing leagues, although he didn't mention any details.

The track editor, which was rumored a while ago, is still a rumor. Yamauchi refused to deny that it was in the game, and smirked when he said, "at this point, it's just a rumor. So you'll have to see."

Finally, and most importantly, Kazunori Yamauchi states , "GT5 is completely different from GT5 Prologue and GT PSP. It's something completely new. It's really got our soul in it." So we're bound to see the best Gran Turismo yet!

more blah, blah, blah...

GT5 is 90% complete, says Yamauchi-san

Polyphony Digital bigwig Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that development of hotly anticipated racer Gran Turismo 5 is roughly 90 percent complete, hence why the game’s Japanese release was postponed.

Speaking with the folks at USA Today, Yamauchi-san commented: “About 90% of the game is done. We are just working on the last 10% and polishing up everything.”

He also touched on the subject of the forthcoming PlayStation Motion Controller – the colloquially dubbed ‘Wand’ – suggesting that if it were to be used with GT5, the device would likely be limited to navigating the user interface.

“It might be used to maybe control the user interface like you would a mouse, but that’s the extent we would use it for,” said Yamauchi.

GT5 was originally scheduled to ship in Japan this March, though quite when it will turn up now is anyone’s guess. Don’t expect a western release for quite some time, either. We’ll keep you posted.

i've gotta admit. i stopped caring about gt altogether because of these delays. do they really think that all these delays are going to make the game so much better that people are going to notice? i highly doubt it. the damn game barely changes from release to release as it is. better graphics is about all i notice, a little improved ai, but thats it!

I thought the demo sucked balls.

After receiving a red light in Japan and no solid concrete release date yet confirmed, an online retailer has hinted at when the release date for Gran Turismo 5 will be.

According to Amazon.com, Gran Turismo 5 is set for a November 1, 2010 release.

Recently in an interview, Sony’s Portugal boss James Armstrong has confirmed that Polyphony Digital’s racer will be racing towards a launch “this fall”.
We believe that launching the product this fall, before Christmas, but not yet decided.

Although this is likely to be a place-holder date, it may turn out to be the actual November release date, as the racer looks very likely to be waiving the checkered flag at its lengthy development process. Multiple N4G forum users are also claiming that Amazon has informed them that the date came direct from Sony.

On top of all this release date talk, Amazon has also updated the price of GT5 taking $5 off the total price for a total of $54.99.

releasing it late in 2010 might not be that bad of an idea. the first 1/3 of this year is so loaded already that releasing it in the first 6 months could be tough on sales.

then again, its in its own genre

New Gran Turismo 5 Trailer: Night Racing

As you may have seen, a brand new trailer for Gran Turismo 5 was debuted on the God of War III Blu-ray disc. So for those of you who saw unofficial copies of it, I want to share that trailer in HD, which can also be found on the official Gran Turismo website along with all of the latest and greatest Gran Turismo news. Fans who purchase God of War III will also be able to view the trailer as a part of the Blu-ray when it is available on store shelves beginning this Tuesday, March 16.

I’m sure you noticed the teaser footage for night racing in this trailer. This feature was first revealed in the February issue of PlayStation The Official Magazine, as part of their 10-page cover story on GT5, but this trailer is the first opportunity fans have to see it in action. Night racing is just one of many new GT5 features.

As you may have heard, our Senior VP of Marketing and PSN, Peter Dille, announced at the GDC press conference that Gran Turismo 5 will be hitting store shelves this year. There’s lots in store for GT5 this year, so stay tuned here on the PS blog and the official GT website for the latest news and info on the game.

Yamauchi: GT5 is 'totally different' than Prologue

Gran Turismo father Kazunori Yamauchi has assured salivating punters that Polyphony Digital’s upcoming GT5 will be “totally different” when compared to the Prologue edition released in 2008.

“Prologue is really only a prologue,” said Yamauchi, during a chinwag with the folks at CVG.

“Though the look and feel of Prologue and the full version will have uniformity, the full version will be totally different in terms of scale and diversity in comparison.”

Recently Yamauchi also addressed the possibility of PlayStation Move functionality in the hit series, suggesting it would only be incorporated if the technology proved “interesting.”

As for when the game is out, well, we’re still none the wiser. However, the developers have assured fans that it will emerge some time in 2010.

How long have we been waiting for Gran Turismo 5? Yeah...a long time; we've had GT5 Prologue and a GT5 time trial demo, but it is time for the actual game.

Gran Turismo 5 will be, without a doubt the definitive driving simulator, releasing exclusivity on PlayStation 3. It has already been revealed that Gran Turismo 5 will feature about 1000 vehicles including Nascar as well. Day and Night racing tracks have been confirmed for the game along with weather changes. Gran Turismo 5 is more than likely to be releasing this year, Gamestop currently has a date set for November 1st 2010, which may be accurate considering that date falls on a Monday.

We should hear more about Gran Turismo 5 at E3 2010.
