"Cross Sale on CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-rays, box sets and games across 230 stores and online comes just weeks after the traditional Boxing Day sale.

Last month the company admitted it is likely to breach its banking covenant - throwing the entertainment retailer's financial future into doubt.

A failure to fulfil lending requirements often signals a company is close to administration, retail analyst Robert Clark told Sky News.

"A lot becomes clear after Christmas - the sale suggests that they didn't have a good one and are trying to reel in as much cash to tie things over," he said.

"I’m not sure how much time they’ve got. I don’t think they’ll be able to sway their bankers. Financial institutions are less likely to show patience in this climate."

But HMV’s chief executive Trevor Moore said in December that closing more stores or placing the business into administration was not "part of our plan" and that the firm was in "constructive discussions" with banks about its performance.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told Sky News the Blue Cross Sale was not unusual for this time of year.

"Normally we'd look to run a multi-buy campaign of some kind at this time of year, but we thought we'd freshen our promotional mix up a bit and try something a bit different that will hopefully stand out from all the other sale offers on the high street right now," he said.

The retailer has taken a huge hit in the face of competition from online retailers like Amazon and Play.

But analysts argue that HMV has failed to reinvent itself in the last 15 years and invest in its stores to keep up with the modern technology revolution.

In December, despite numerous promotions,it announced total sales had fallen 13.5%, while like-for-like sales were down 10.2% in the six months to October 27.

HMV reported a loss before tax of £37.3m - an improvement on the £48.1m loss over the same period the year before. But net debt at the 91 year-old company increased from £163.7m to £176.1m.-bank-deadline."

HMV has told Eurogamer it doesn't see administration as the end of its 90-year-old British entertainment retail business.

"We've got an administrator from Deloitte coming in and I understand the plan is to carry on trading with a view to finding a buyer or to at least develop some options that will allow us to take the business forward," spokesperson Gennaro Castaldo told me.

"We don't see this as a final chapter; we still believe there is a future. It might have to be a slightly different future, but one we can still try to achieve, so we're working hard to make that happen."

Administrator Deloitte is expected to take control of HMV "I believe from today at some point", Castaldo said.

I spoke to Deloitte this morning and was told its appointment as administrator wasn't official yet. It expects to make an announcement this afternoon.

"We don't see this as a final chapter; we still believe there is a future."

Gennaro Castaldo, HMV

Castaldo told me there had been a Head Office meeting this morning and chain-wide conference call to begin the process of informing the 4350 staff spread across 239 stores at HMV about what is going on.

"We've just briefed everyone," said Castaldo.

"Communications have gone out to all work colleagues so I think they understand, and they've been told just to carry on working as normal with as much dedication and effort as they always show. That will be the best way of putting us in a position where we can try and move forward as a business."

He reaffirmed that no HMV shops are to immediately close as a result of the administration. What Deloitte will do, however, Castaldo can't yet know.

Castaldo referred to the suspension of gift vouchers as "a fairly standard thing in retail administration situations". You may remember GAME doing similar when faced with adminstration last year.

Will you ever be able to redeem that Christmas gift voucher or store credit gifted to you in a similar way?

Castaldo said he'd have to look into the small print, but thinks "there's usually a procedure that allows them [you] to make an application to the administrator". "And if there were to be a buyer in due course," he added, "there might be further communication about it as well."

All pre-orders HMV intends to honour.

"We would intend to follow through on those [pre-orders]," Castaldo affirmed.

"We're doing our very best to continue operating as per normal. There are a couple of areas such as gift cards where unfortunately we can't do that, but effectively we've got new owners now and when you get into an administration it can impact on vouchers and gift cards. But everything else we're doing our best to continue as normal."

I don't know about the UK but I spoke to a really nice guy I've been dealing with for some time in my local HMV in Ireland today, and he reckons they won't be getting in any new stock only trying to shift what they have for now. :( (so much for all the cool Steelbooks lined up for the coming weeks) Needless to say the guy seemed pretty down and I'm sure most staff don't have a definite idea of what will happen, but it looks like the last of the HMV exclusives (at least over here) for now :(

Was told the same in my local, uk based. Retailers aren't releasing stock so what they've got is all they can sell.

So what do those of us with pre-orders still in place do that dont want them anymore? I guess only option is to call the credit card company and block charges?

If they've gone whats to say they'll charge you for pre-orders? But yeah, I guess you could always block the charges?

I returned a damaged Steelbook last week and I am yet to hear back from them. Does that mean I can't do anything about it?

Yes.sorry. But reading the law, you are now a creditor and have to join the queue and be dealt with by the administrators. Your best and quickest way is to contact your credit card company or bank having receipt of postage for posting item back. You my be able to file a parcel lost with post office as a last case, perhaps although prob not legal that option.
