"Cross Sale on CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-rays, box sets and games across 230 stores and online comes just weeks after the traditional Boxing Day sale.

Last month the company admitted it is likely to breach its banking covenant - throwing the entertainment retailer's financial future into doubt.

A failure to fulfil lending requirements often signals a company is close to administration, retail analyst Robert Clark told Sky News.

"A lot becomes clear after Christmas - the sale suggests that they didn't have a good one and are trying to reel in as much cash to tie things over," he said.

"I’m not sure how much time they’ve got. I don’t think they’ll be able to sway their bankers. Financial institutions are less likely to show patience in this climate."

But HMV’s chief executive Trevor Moore said in December that closing more stores or placing the business into administration was not "part of our plan" and that the firm was in "constructive discussions" with banks about its performance.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told Sky News the Blue Cross Sale was not unusual for this time of year.

"Normally we'd look to run a multi-buy campaign of some kind at this time of year, but we thought we'd freshen our promotional mix up a bit and try something a bit different that will hopefully stand out from all the other sale offers on the high street right now," he said.

The retailer has taken a huge hit in the face of competition from online retailers like Amazon and Play.

But analysts argue that HMV has failed to reinvent itself in the last 15 years and invest in its stores to keep up with the modern technology revolution.

In December, despite numerous promotions,it announced total sales had fallen 13.5%, while like-for-like sales were down 10.2% in the six months to October 27.

HMV reported a loss before tax of £37.3m - an improvement on the £48.1m loss over the same period the year before. But net debt at the 91 year-old company increased from £163.7m to £176.1m.-bank-deadline."

i'm sure we'll get a better idea of what'll happen with skyfall preorders (online) soon.

the message on the site says the site is suspended and no purchases can be made on the site until further notice'

as things stand it may just be a temporary action whilst the administrators assess HMV's current predicament. GAME did the same thing, they ceased trading online for a while, and stopped accepting vouchers and eventually the administrators green lighted the website being used again and allowed gift cards to be used. here's hoping hmv will go the same way.

i dont really think this is the end of hmv, i reckon we'll see a large chunk of their stores being closed, if game could be saved maybe hmv can to.

The steelbooks, THE STEELBOOKS?????

So, what will happen to the forthcoming steelbooks, specifically Looper and Skyfall. Will they still be sent out or has that now all gone. Will another retailer take up the exclusive steelbook titles... Play, we're looking at you....

They were saying on the news earlier that the hmv executives are confident there will be a buy out, and keep trading. We shall see al my orders are cancelled will get Instore.

Ps that price is £3-4 more expensive than hmv EEK!

If you're like me and specifically use a debit card with no overdraft ability onine, simply move all funds into another account a week before release day :D

So empty the bank account and incur a load of bank charges, great advice

Most likely they will not be fulfilled until the administrators have decided how they will act. Looper has already been made available to other retailers and I see no reason why they won't do the same for Skyfall or any of the other HMV exclusives. If they've been produced, then i'm sure they will be moved onto other retailers to be sold.

You think there is a big risk, and I ordered Looper Skyfall?
Do you think we will have time to cancel orders between?

Thank you in advance

Other retailers will be getting them, perhaps in addition to HMV.

chadrtc from play.com told us that the industry got a notification of some kind advertising a steelbook release or two.

Very possibly could end up with amazon and who knows, maybe other spots too.

The biggest risk would be that if something were to arrived damaged, you will have almost no chance of getting a replacement.

I do believe the website will be back at some point.

If HMV goes back online, what's going to happen... everyone will cancel all of their orders and HMV lose more orders than they could ever hope to take. I have a bad feeling that we are all locked in (unless we instruct our Banks to block HMV). Once the majority of pre-orders are fulfilled, then the website may return with a firesale.

Just Looper, if Skyfall does not come over to Amazon UK, I might stick with my joint order for the French steelbook for both Looper and Skyfall

I am also thinking of calling my credit card company to stop Deloitte stealing my money. I won't panic just yet, but if the site is still down by next week, then that is when I will act.

There's a huge difference in acquiring stock from a business in administration than actively contacting studious and developing new and exclusive steelbooks.

Personally I don't think Amazon will be doing it this year.
