Yeah, it's good to know we finally have an answer on print run. I believe the employee said 1000 were made.
From another Forum:
"I am so sorry - just heard back from my Canadian colleagues.
They did a special promotion run for Comic Con, so it was true. Only 1000 pcs!
I apologize, but as this release was out of spec (our moq normally is much higher) and probably why I couldn’t back track."
So, do you think that this makes them more valuable, or the same, since everyone was already assuming the print run was 900?
I am glad that we finally got some kind of confirmation on the production run.
As to the "potential" stability of perceived market value long term, I think it is too early to tell. In my opinion, there are several factors that may play a role in this area.
1) Demand - Will there be strong demand (long term) past these initial offerings on Ebay? While there has been a lot of support (visually) for this steelbook thus far, I haven't seen a lot of heavy bidding on the few steels that have been offered. It could be that a lot of people outside the forums still don't know about this steelbook. Maybe demand will increase (to some degree) once word about the steelbook filters more amongst the masses.
2) Popularity - How popular is this movie amongst movie collectors / steelbook collectors (as a whole)? I can't answer that. From what I have read on the various forums, it has been received (overall) with a hit or miss reception, as far as the movie itself is concerned.
3) G1 versus G2 - Many people have dismissed the steelbook because it is a G1 release. I believe that will have an impact with the demand aspect. It appears, at least thus far, that if it had been a G2 release, demand would be higher ( at least this point in time) for the steelbook. That could change over the next several months.
4) Region coding - If this G1 release were confirmed to be region free, or A, B, at a minimum, I believe that would impact (in a positive way) the demand for the steelbook, for those who like the movie, even if it is a G1 release.
5) Supply - It is possible, that a lot of people who know about the steelbook, are holding back, in anticipation of the remaining inventory being offered on wbshop.com at the $45.00 price or slightly lower. If that does happen, demand will be high and I predict the remaining stock will sell fast, even to those who don't care for G1. Many want the steelbook, but they don't want to pay current Ebay prices.
One thing we haven't seen thus far, are a lot of auctions from "average joe and average mary convention attendee. I don't know if that is due to the steelbook not selling well, or because those who purchased the steelbook not realizing the potential collector gem they (unknowingly) bought.
In my opinion, it is too early to say what the consistent long term market value of the steelbook will be. Over the next several months, I believe we will get a better idea of what the future may hold for this steelbook. I think the steelbook ( right now) is still in "sleeper mode" with the public at large. That could change.
I have been checking YouTube every day, and I have yet to see someone make a video about the steelbook. That is a venue that could help develop interest if not demand, for the steelbook.
Long term, I think you got a good deal with the steelbook.
