I now have confirmation that I can announce ... for all those worried about future packaging from Zavvi. My Play contact has been working with zavvi as well on this mission for better packaging. Between the 3 of us and the future comments from this community after its in place I'm sure it will be go over well.

no one anwsered :( so i'm reposting

"i was wondering, if you buy 4 steels and get the tracked shipping method for free(international shipping), is the package better/are the steels more protected? does it get generally delivered faster(as i would guess)?
thanks in advance!"
I now have experience of two cases of tracked shipping of a steelbook, both times unwanted (tracked shipping, not the steelbook).

These were during a 10-month period when Zavvi forced tracked shipping for all steelbook pre-orders to some countries, including Finland. That practice has stopped now (and I almost always managed to avoid the tracked shipping, anyway).

Antway, I got one steelbook in an oversized bubble envelope (arrived bent), and one in an A1 cardboard envelope (luckily arrived undamaged).

As of now, I have two steelbooks on the way with free tracked shipping, and I already dread the day of their arrival.

I've already complained to Zavvi CS about this practice, but as often happens, got back a useless stock reply indicating that my message wasn't really understood (or not even properly read).

To me it seems that Zavvi is wasting their money in a big way, unless they are using at least the white cardboard boxes used for the regular untracked shipping. First the tracked shipping costs and then the inevitable replacements and refunds for the damaged steelbooks due to inappropriate packaging.

Why all this negativity towards Zavvi? If you don't like this particular steelbook then don't buy the damn thing. Nothing at all wrong with having a two year anniversary when you have something to celebrate - I've just checked how many steelbooks Zavvi have released in this two-year period and it's about 220 - that's worth celebrating in my book!.
Regarding Zavvi: We all know that their customer service is non-existent with stock replies the norm and their methods questionable in declaring certain steelbooks "Sold out" and then bringing them back after release date at a reduced price...
All things considered however I feel that collectors should be thanking Zavvi for virtually single-handedly keeping the UK steelbook market alive - you only have to glance at UK steelbook releases during the past two years to see that there would have been precious few releases without Zavvi's contribution and some collectors, myself not included, would have had to buy steelbooks from abroad.
We should also thank Zavvi for keeping alive the similar excellent steelbook packaging boxes used previously by Play.com which means, at least in my case, that hardly any arrive damaged.

How did you count how many Steelbooks they released in 2 years? You have access to a database or something?!

Further to the above, it seems that Amazon are not interested in selling exclusive steelbooks - I can't think of more than half-a-dozen Amazon exclusive steelbooks over the past two years - and the less said about HMV the better except to say that I find HMV exclusives a real pain because, even in London and the suburbs where I live, nearly all the stores that I used to frequent to buy LPs and later Blu-rays have been closed down. Now it seems that our options are limited to buying these off eBay at potentially inflated prices (or from group buys if you have the required number of posts) although I saw a site the other day called xtra-vision where these HMV Exclusives can apparently be pre-ordered. I haven't done so yet as I'm waiting for a reply to my enquiry as to whether these will be:-
- Priced the same as instore with p&p incuded in the quoted price?
- HMV Exclusive stickered/HMV security taped?
- Charged on order date or on depatch date?
- Posted in suitable steelbook packaging?
I'll naturally post the contents of the reply here, if it comes, in case it may be of interest to other contributors.
Entertainment Store is another pain with their abortion that was "Jack Reacher" (which was if I remember correctly meant to have a print run of 500 - and was priced accordingly) where free copies were sent out to the original purchasers because it had the very faintest hairline on the face of the steelbook thus providing an early Christmas for scalpers on eBay (with some sellers offering 20 plus copies of this on there) and effectively increasing the print run to 1,000 in the process. More recently we have "Anchorman 2" priced obscenely high for most of its life with their stubborn refusal to offer it at more reasonable price (let's not forget the manufacturing fault on the case) and with this item ending its life with Zavvi at GBP 12.99 where the copy I received (before I sent it back) had clearly visible a mark where the E.S. exclusive sticker had been removed by Zavvi.

I checked the steelbook shelves in my study against my written list of steelbooks purchased - this includes reference to exclusives and, if exclusive, exclusive to which retailer.

Why go to the trouble of writing out a hand written list of over 200 Steelbooks? Bizarre!
I've got my Zavvi steels into a separate collection category on BD Forum, and I can easily tell that I own 184. And I have stopped pre-ordering them here in the past few months, so I know they have put out quite a bit more than that. ;)

In regards to Xtra-vision/HMV online ordering
They answer all the above questions on their website under help
You may though have a authorized payment listed on your debit card as a pending transaction if 2 items in a same order have different release dates but actual payment would not be released to HMV or Xtra-vision until ready to be despatched

I have contacted them in regards to this as the debit card really should not be processed until before despatch and order status should be Pre-order placed

A single Pre item order though your card would not be debited until just before been shipped and your order status would say pre order and then change to processing when items are been processed for shipping and only then is your debit/credit card charged but it would show before this in your account as Payment authorization approved when you place your order

Packaging I cant answer that yet 100% as they are only just making available pre orders online and none of been released yet but previous HMV packaging was only a cardboard mailer but the few I did order never arrived damaged

They would only have the security tag when its in a shop and not for online orders

Over 600 sorted by release date from 2008 - you asked and I replied.
Hardly bizarre to keep track of purchases with a numbering system on the shelves corresponding to numbers on a written list as this makes it easy to find any steelbook at a given time.

Thanks so much - very kind of you to respond in a typically knowledgeable fashion.

Just when I was complaining about Zavvi's packaging for steelbooks sent via International Tracked shipping (bubble envelope, A1 cardboard envelope), they improve things

Received the Horns steelbook today packaged in Entertainment Store type cardboard sleeve mailer. This feels a bit better than the regular Zavvi white box, as the sleeve is folded over itself, providing a double layer of cardboard on every side except one edge.

Well done in the packaging department, Zavvi

Now, if I could just understand why Zavvi is sending me some items of one order using tracked service, but not charging for it... :dunno:
