It looks like our former thread has become unavailable, so I am posting a new one. Feel free to post pics and share your worst experiences with damaged Steelbooks as received from retailers. I've stickied this one for now.

I think they do. I found an old email where I was dealing with them over a damaged steelbook. This is what they said:

Please kindly keep the receipt of sending the defective item back to us. We will be responsible in bearing your returning shipping cost if the package is returned by regular Air Mail.

What would you guys do if you received a Steelbook from a member (not from this forum thankfully ) in this condition?

Horrible packaging (even worse than Future Shop's flimsy padded envelopes) and what makes it worse is that I paid a fortune for this (probably most expensive Steelbook I ever imported).

That's terrible! I'd beat them. Nah, I wouldn't accept that steel though. Not fair to you at all.

Ask for your money back and have them pay for shipping. People need to learn how to ship items properly. It's their fault.

I am going to be more weary of newer members or those with very few transactions but suddenly started to sell more, especially on the blu-ray forums. Two in a row of bad experiences with terrible packaging now.
I should make sure to triple remind people to pack well.

I did take the usual precautions of paying with Paypal, no gift, etc. but I hope to work it all out without a Paypal claim, hope the seller accepts a return and full refund.

Well there's some good news there Leshita, paypal will protect you if the seller is not responsive.

I use the words bomb proof and sometimes that gets the point across.

What is your secret?
I have tried repairing smaller dents and those usually turn out okay, but nothing this bad so far. :/
Which kind of tools do you use to flatten the Steelbook?
I was planning on keeping this one sealed too since I heard PS3 Skyrim is unplayable. I might just take you up on the offer if I can't return this one.

This is through a third party forum though, how would Paypal know if the seller is responsive to my messages or not? :S

Leshita-what happens is Paypal sends the seller a request for additional info, if you despite certain things. If you say they've not responded, and they have, I am sure they will tell Paypal that, and provide proof. Otherwise, they provide the info that Paypal requests, and then Paypal reviews all info you both submit, and makes a determination of who should be refunded, if anyone, or if there is some other solution. The seller has xxx days to reply, or the issue is escalated. Be sure not to miss the window for a dispute, if you've already tried and failed to contact the forum member.

Just to add to what DB says - before you escalate the case to paypal support, you are allowed to enter as many comments, attachments (pictures of damage) as you want.

But once you escalate, you can no longer add any more information.

So make sure you get all your details on there if the seller is not responsive, so paypal has a lot of info to work with.

If you are keeping this sealed you would be best to get a replacement as it needs opened to be fixed if it can be fixed.

You can't really tell by a picture how bad the damage is and also you never know how well it will respond to manipulation.

I would only try a repair if its not been tried before, theres only so much give in the steel.

Separate the covers from the inlay. I make sure its well heated up, fill the sink with very hot water or place it on a radiator for a bit, till its hot to the touch. Don't worry about the paint it can take a bit of heating.

Each dent is unique and I just deal with them as I come across them. The tools I use are an old plastic set of confectioners tools my buddy had when he was doing all the fancy cake stuff. I don't know what he done with them but they are great for manipulating the steel.

Only have a go if you are confident its a fine line between a fix and a fubar. Hope this helps bud P.

I don't really remember exactly when I paid for the Steelbook on Paypal but it should be within 45 days for sure. I just messaged him earlier today so hopefully he replies soon, not sure how long I should wait before filing any dispute. I will try and provide as much detail as possible to Paypal when / if I file a claim.


Pud1804: So you actually heat up the Steelbook covers before you manipulate the dents? Wow, I will give that a go next time I fix a Steelbook. I usually use a stylus for my Wacom tablet to work through the dents, but I use lots of strength for the more nifty dents, but heating it up might relieve that it seems.

Yes heating up the damaged steelbook cover really helps the remolding. You don't have to use too much brute strength I guess Just as pud did, I put it in a basin of freshly boiled hot water and let it warm up for a minute or two. Be careful picking it out of the hot water. I also crank up the heat in the room as well especially during the colder months to slow down the cooling of the cover. I found the flat ends of a pair of knitting needles to be perfect for remolding these dents. Good luck!
