I now have confirmation that I can announce ... for all those worried about future packaging from Zavvi. My Play contact has been working with zavvi as well on this mission for better packaging. Between the 3 of us and the future comments from this community after its in place I'm sure it will be go over well.

I'm starting to get the feeling that Zavvi doesn't actually send out things when they say they do.

I had preordered a whole batch of the Steelbooks that came out end of last month/start of this month. No problems with my card so they were all dispatched on time. Alice, Robin Hood, TMNT and Maniac Cop were the first to be dispatched and I got Alice a while ago now. Swingers and TMNT got to me at the same time, about five days after Alice and Swingers was supposedly sent out only a couple of days before it arrived. I saw the Devil came yesterday, and today I was pleasantly surprised to find Hercules in my mailbox. Maniac Cop and Robin Hood are MIA and they are amongst the first batch to be sent out.

Maybe it's time to update the OP, which shows photo's of Zavvi's previous and more reliable packaging. Are Zavvi still testing this risky A1 card mailer, with variations of foam or bubblewrap? it has been a while now.

Everybody I know gets the A1 mailer so I would guess we are beyond the 'trial' stage and this is now the norm.

From the posts of people i've been seeing lately.. is it true that zavvi have now stopped the normal white protective boxes and switched to some brown letter envelope permanently?

Yes, i have also had a large empty brown box where the steelbooks banged around inside and also a plastic bag. Its pretty shocking

Final update...

Got an email today with return information, as the steelbook was damaged they're (rightly) covering the postage. Annoying that it has to be returned, but took them 2 days from receiving the item to sort out taking it back, which isn't horrendous but could still be improved.

Managed to get Hercules off ebay for 1p more than Zavvi so looks like I'll be taking a break from ordering from them until I know they'll package things more securely. :(

My damaged Alice in Wonderland is being replaced and despatched already. Hopefully this one will be undamaged. Or if it's damaged hopefully the back will be fine and I can swap them.

So what's the typical response time on an initial e-mail complaint to [email protected]? I sent off a couple the other day about my damaged TMNT and Hercules steelbooks.

Got replies to my separate e-mails about damaged steels. Immediate replacement copy for Hercules but then same guy asked if I wanted a replacement or refund on TMNT (I went with replacement). Must have a smaller number of those left or something. So response time ended up not being too bad considering US/UK time differences.

I have an issue which I have taken up with Zavvi.

2 steels which were dispatched at the beginning of June have not arrived (I assume they have been nicked because Under the Skin was delivered this morning) and I told them I was out of the country and was unable to contact them sooner but I have been told because it is outside their (somewhat arbitrary) 40 day period I am not entitled to either a replacement (because they have none) or a even refund! Is that even legal?

I've emailed back saying that isn't good enough and will now await their reply.

I should think that if you can supply documentry evidence of your being out of the country and unable to access your mail etc., that you have them over a barrel.

After my recent damaged Steels I complained bitterly (again) - both times, and they assured me that: A. They are taking onboard all complaints regarding packaging, and B. They are working on different and better ways to 'send delicate items such as steelbooks' .

So, basically, the message is: If it's damaged complain (A LOT); tell them you cannot send photos; and make a point of saying you want an undamaged replacement.

The current packaging is not the end of the road- just a bloody awful blip in the middle!

I think the message is maybe beginning to dawn on them
