I now have confirmation that I can announce ... for all those worried about future packaging from Zavvi. My Play contact has been working with zavvi as well on this mission for better packaging. Between the 3 of us and the future comments from this community after its in place I'm sure it will be go over well.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was gloss

There's always exceptions to the rule. A niche title such as that attracts less attention and many of it's audience won't be as fussed about finish, than say a higher profile more popular title like Aliens.

I'm sure Zavvi read these forums and with the overwhelmingly negative reactions to several new titles they would have announced very quickly if these had nice finishes to secure more orders. It's not rocket science, it's just simple basic intelligence to know how they seem to be operating of late.

I maybe proved wrong, but I highly doubt it! In which case they will be giving premium finishes to some truly poor art.

Of course you can fabricate rules to suit your argument. I can say that so far there has been one 'ultra limited' title from Lionsgate and it had a gloss finish. Therefore the rule is that 'ultra limited' Lionsgate titles are glossy. I do agree that the art is generally poor though.

Guys I apologise for being lazy and not scrolling through all the posts :D I've had to change my card and I've heard you can't change your card details for pre orders. If Zavvi try to charge my card my order will get declined, do I then have the chance to pay with another card ?

Thanks for your help

Generally yes. While I've heard people had their orders cancelled after their card couldn't be charged, it has never happened to me. I also recently went through the card change, my previous one expired end of march and I've had at least 6 or 7 preorders with it on zavvi that were released after that. With all of them I received the "card declined" email, and I was able to put in the details of my new card for all of them after that and all went through fine.

What happens if Zavvi (knowing they send pre-orders out early) unrealistically speaking attempt to charge my card with not enough money to fulfil the orders on it? I've got several orders, some released on May 5th and I don't get paid until May 2nd. I try to plan my SB orders the best I can, there are so many releases sometimes I get a bit lost.

I know I should always have money in my account as others have suggested in the past, however I'm no where near as wealthy as some people here and Zavvi's recent flash sale reeled me in :D

So, three days before release should be fine, right?

Statistical Analysis of Zavvi Exclusives (Steelbooks)

Since Zavvi's first exclusive release - Who Framed Roger Rabbit, there have been 99 releases in total not counting pre-orders as at 19th April 2014

The following graphs represent the original release price vs the current value (price) taking into account price drops if still for sale on Zavvi or the mean across the last 3 sales on ebay UK

Zavvi Exclusives Graph 1.jpg

Zavvi Exclusives Graph 2.jpg

Notes:
1. The original price does not take into account any discount vouchers or special offers that could have been used at the time of purchase
2. Only the last 3 sales as of April 2014 have been used for the calculation of values to indicate what it would cost today to purchase exactly the same new sealed item
3. Postage costs have not been included
4. No conclusion is inferred from the above information - This should be interpreted from each viewer of the data

Same as above. You'll get a "card declined" e-mail for those that didn't go through, then you have about a week to sort out your funds and have them retry the card. It should all work out fine.

Also, they often send more than 3 days before release, closer to a week before release.

This is the perfect example of how Zavvi have got people hooked on ultra limited (2000) print runs.

I like the design, so I will buy it. Simple as that.

Does a 2000 print run really satisfy the collectors thirst? No, I don't think so.

The biggest to benefit from the 2000 print runs are Zavvi and the people that knock them out on eBay.

None of these titles will be grails, or worth more than £10 than the original selling price.

The more I come on here, the more obvious collecting has become a business venture, rather than a hobby.

I would be quite happy if everything was a 10,000 print run and cost no more than a tenner

Soo wise!

I wouldn't be so sure. Most Play exclusives were available cheaply months after release but now some fetch three or four times the original price. In the short term these won't be worth much, but you never know what they'll be worth in a year or two.

I think the difference then, was interest in steelbooks was not as great as it is today.

Zavvi, in particular, have flooded the market with countless releases.

We have too many releases to keep up and the quality with a lot of them has reduced significantly.

Yeah its different from play.com days because retailers like zavvi, kimchi and blufans are out for blood and are hell bent on destroying the long term game - the moment any steel shows a hint of value on ebay, they will find some excuse, some gimmick or another to reprint it. :movie:

-EDIT-

of course what these greedy retailers don’t realize is that when enough ppl realise that they are wasting their time buying multiples, overall steelbook sales at the retail leavel will drop massively over the long term as well …Basically as more and more see the value of their lucky bet drop through the floor cuz of all these reprints, they’ll be far more wiser with their investments going forward ..hell maybe they might even realise their money is far better spent on physical gold/silver so they can be set in time for WWIII :) :scat:

I send an Email to zavvi, asking about the 10€ shipping charge to Finland, and this what they send me:

"Thank you for getting in touch about ordering with us.

I have looked into this for you and I have found that as of now this is the price we are charging to ship items to Finland"

So that means, bye, bye zavvi, it was nice working with you while it lasted. There is no way that i am going to pay 10€ for shipping, especially when its just one pre-order steel.

I think putting Zavvi, Kimchi and blufans in the same grouping is a bit misleading. Kimchi average to about 1.5 exclusives per month if that. You will be lucky to see blufans release more than 10 exclusives this year or any. I don't see them flooding as you suggest. To address the reprint factor, it seems you give play a pass for reissues. IM play was exactly that. As I see it, the UK market seems to have exploded. It's not just Zavvi releasing steelbooks. Fox titles are issued steelbooks quite often, MOC have their releases, HMV is chipping in and ES as well though the latter 2 more responsibly IMO and other studios are chipping in as well. You can actually keep up with Kimchi and blufans editions as they are quite well spaced out.

That's a shame as you could have a UK member ship a steelbook for cheaper.

By end of the year, I expect Zavvi to start charging more for shipping to certain destinations. Aforementioned several times, a retailer simply cannot afford to afford such cheap shipping, and deal with loads of damages and false claims on a long run.

We shouldn't be comparing a big retailer like Zavvi Vs. Blufans / Kimchi which are run by few people.
